SI SHI TONG TANG {FOUR GENERATIONS UNDER ONE ROOF}
{PART 4} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part four in
this series based on the novel by Lao She about an
extended family that embodies the Chinese nation's
strength during World War II.
Part four deals with the Qi family's reaction to Qi
Ruiquan (third oldest grandson of the Qi family) is
leaving; details the 75th Birthday Party of the Elder
Qi; shows the beginning of the deterioration of the Qi
family due to Qi Ruifeng's (second oldest grandson of
the Qi family) wish to divide the family. Part four
begins with the next morning when the Elder Qi is
looking for Ruiquan, who has left in the middle of the
night to join the war in the South at the end of part
three. Not wanting to upset his elderly grandfather, Qi
Ruixuan (oldest grandson of the Qi family) tells the
Elder Qi that Ruiquan has gone to his university to
study. Ruixuan does tell his wife the truth though when
she questions him next, and the conversation is
overheard by Ruifeng who blames Ruixuan for letting
Ruiquan leave and putting their family in danger of
treason in the eyes of the Japanese-controlled
government. Ruifeng goes further to say that he wants to
divide the family and live on his own with his wife, but
Ruixuan won’t hear of it and ends the conversation
quickly. Not much later, the Elder Qi finds out the
truth about Ruiquan's leaving and is very saddened about
it. In order to lighten her grandfather-in-law's mood,
Yunmei (Ruixuan's wife) plans to throw a good party to
celebrate his 75th birthday despite the family’s current
financial condition. A few days later, Japanese soldiers
arrive at the doorsteps of the Qian household, where
they search and destroy possessions of the Qian family,
and then beat up and arrest the head of the house, Mr.
Qian Moyin. Afterwards, everyone in the neighborhood is
outraged and depressed about the event, especially the
Elder Qi who lends some money to Mrs. Qian to alleviate
her family's situation. On the Elder Qi's birthday, no
one except for an old family friend named Chang Er
comes to the party due to the war. Chang Er, who is also
employed as caretaker of the Qi's family burial site,
warns them that the site is endangered by Japanese
soldiers and local rioters. To add to the family's
troubles, Pang Juzi (Ruifeng's wife) again urges her
husband to divide the family and become friends of the
Guan family in order to be on good terms with the
Japanese. Part four ends with the couple just about to
go over to the Guan's household with their new plan.
