DARK ANGEL: SHORTIES IN LOVE (TV)

Summary

One in this series about Max Guevera, a genetically engineered soldier prototype; Logan Cale, an underground cyber-journalist; and their struggles to uncover Max's mysterious past and bring justice to the post-apocalyptic world of 2019. In this episode, Max installs a water heater in her rundown apartment with her friends' help, though damage from rats soon renders it inoperable. Later, at Crash, Original Cindy is surprised by a visit from her ex-girlfriend Diamond Latrell. Though at first wary of her former flame's troubled past, Cindy soon gives in to her charm. Max visits Logan and is intrigued to catch him writing poetry, though he is more interested in the actions of Pierpont Lemkin, a criminal who is smuggling weapons for the cartel. He asks Max to break into his safe and steal some important disks, providing her with the necessary blueprints, and Max considers taking a little extra cash for herself at the same time. When she returns home, Cindy asks if Diamond can stay for a short while, hopeful that things will work out between them now that she is no longer involved in crime. Max then poses as a deliverywoman and sneaks into Lemkin's house with the "help" of one of the rats from her home, though Lemkin catches her and throws her out.

As Max, Diamond and Cindy leave Guru's, Max senses a "situation" and quickly fights off several assailants. She steals a gun from one of them and shows it to Logan, guessing that they are not Lydecker's men, and asks again about his poems, though he seems reluctant to discuss the matter. At home, Diamond and Cindy fantasize about running away to Mexico together, and Diamond is interested to see that Max possesses various criminal tools as well as impressive fighting skills. Spotting the blueprints for Lemkin's home, she asks Max about her "alternative career" and offers to help, but Max refuses to elaborate. At work, Cindy is taken aback when Max asks her to send Diamond away from their home, and Logan tells Max that her attacks were expensive bounty hunters hired by an unknown source and urges her to lay low. Nevertheless, she heads back to Lemkin's at night, unaware that Diamond is following her. She breaks into the safe and steals the disks and the money, but Diamond swipes the goods and escapes, leaving Max to be caught by the police. Max pretends not to know her "partner," and she is tranquilized and taken to a lab, where a mysterious man interrogates her about her health before telling his sidekick to "get rid of her" with an injection. She escapes and hurries to update Logan, who discovers that the lab was part of Synthedyne, a corrupt pharmaceutical company headed by CEO Sidney Croal, and that Diamond recently escaped from his prison.

Diamond finds Cindy and admits that she is on the run, explaining that she is terminally ill and wants to make the most of the rest of her life, and Cindy decides to quit her job and head with her to Mexico with the money stolen from Lemkin. Sebastian, however, explains to Max and Logan that Croal was using convicts as guinea pigs and infected Diamond with a virus known as AN918, which is contagious when not controlled by drugs. Max hurries to find Cindy and learns that she and an increasingly ill Diamond are headed for Mexico on a bus, but the bus is intercepted by Croal's men. Cindy is determined to be healthy and Croal plans to use her for tests as well, but Max breaks into Synthedyne to rescue her. Cindy is crushed when Diamond tells them to leave without her, as there is no hope for a cure, and Max helps Diamond to escape her cell and fatally infect Croal before dying. At home, Cindy mourns her loss and tells Max about how Diamond helped her to become her true self. During a "brown-out," Max visits Logan and he hesitantly agrees to show her one of his poems, and she is touched to realize that the piece is about her and that he is supporting her through her tough time as she is supporting Cindy through hers.
