VIEW, THE {REESE WITHERSPOON, LAUREN GRAHAM} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of daytime talk shows hosted by a multi-generational group of women, presided over by Barbara Walters, moderated by journalist Meredith Vieira, and including journalist Lisa Ling, attorney Star Jones, and comedian Joy Behar. In this edition, Vieira acts as Walters's replacement. After an introductory chat about the films of guest Reese Witherspoon, the hosts discuss the day's "hot topics": a producer's recent bridal shower; debate about appropriate presents for a bride-to-be; and whether couples should be "madly in love" before getting married or just compatible. In the "Talk To Me" segment, Vieria reads a letter from a woman complaining about her slovenly husband's habits in public, and the women discuss how to handle another's embarrassing behavior.

Guest Witherspoon, bearing gifts, then sits down with the women to promote her new film "Sweet Home Alabama." They discuss the following topics: the proposal scene from the film set at the Tiffany's store; her experience with culture shock after moving to L.A. from Louisiana; the unique qualities of Southern women; her family as her "reality check"; her actor husband Ryan Phillippe and his marriage proposal; her similarities to her "Alabama" character Melanie; her reaction to press comments and being called a "golden girl"; false assumptions about Southerners; her relationship with her brother; and her daughter Ava's recent birthday party. She then presents a Tiffany's diamond ring to a couple in the audience who won a contest associated with the film.

Next, viewers Jeanie Terhune, Alex House and Kim Kerley perform stand-up comedy as part of the ongoing "Hilarious Housewife" contest, touching upon topics including their husbands, their children and aging. The audience then votes by applause and House is declared the winner. Guest Lauren Graham then sits down with the hosts to discuss her show "Gilmore Girls," the dramatic series about Lorelai Gilmore, a thirty-something mother raising her teenage daughter Rory under the constant surveillance of her overbearing and very wealthy parents, Emily and Richard. They discuss the following topics: her experiences with dating and opinions on friends' marriages; her character's best-friendship with her daughter Rory, played by Alexis Bledel; embarrassing moments with her own family and her father's covert dating habits; taking her dad as her date to the Screen Actors Guild Awards; her friendship with actress Connie Britton and their "schemes" for saving money in their early days of acting; and her love of horses and early dream of being a jockey, made difficult by her height. Vieria then closes the show with an anecdote about humbling comments made by her son. Includes commercials and promos.
