1900 HOUSE, THE: THE END OF AN ERA {PART 4 OF 4} (TV)
Summary
Part four of four. One in this four-part series -- the American edition of the joint Channel 4/WNET production -- in which an average modern British family moves into a home restored to its authentic 1900 state and assumes the role of a Victorian middle-class family for three months. In episode four, the monotonous Victorian routine wears on the Bowler family. The 11-year-old twins Ruth and Hilary decide to start a magazine. Joyce becomes frustrated by her relationship with the maid, Elizabeth, who is constantly late to work. Elizabeth, unhappy with her existence in 1900 House, researches the lives of Victorian-era working-class women; similarly, Joyce's frustrations lead her to research women's history, in her case, the Suffragette movement. Joyce's studies leaves her questioning the household hierarchy, and leads her to make a surprising decision. The Bowlers have their first night out: the music hall performance they attend inspires teenage daughter Kathryn to ignore Victorian middle-class mores and become a music hall performer. Joyce, Ruth and Hilary visit the Victoria and Albert Museum: while the twins interview the museum's Head of Research, Clive Wainwright, for their paper and look at film of Queen Victoria visiting the museum in May 1899, Joyce peruses the work of a Victorian woman photographer and reflects on the identity she's created for herself as a 1900 woman. With two days left in the house, the Bowlers host a Victorian summer party; as they prepare refreshments, Rooke and the Bowlers reflect on the 1900 House project. As the program ends, the Bowlers return to the modern world; each family member talks about what he or she appreciates most about the modern world after three months in Victorian London.
