JIM NABORS SHOW, THE {CAROL BURNETT, BURT REYNOLDS, BETTY WHITE} {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this comedy/variety series hosted by actor Jim Nabors. In this episode, Nabors' mother Mavis serves as announcer and Nabors chats with several audience members, including a couple who is planning to elope. He is then joined by guests Carol Burnett and Burt Reynolds, and several audience members are flustered when Reynolds requests their help in deciding on a "theme" for his appearance.

Next, Nabors, Reynolds, and Burnett decide to test an audience member's "believability." They challenge a woman to telephone her husband and successfully convince him within 60 seconds that she is in fact on Nabors' show and hobnobbing with celebrities. The husband seems skeptical, even when Burnett and Reynolds – doing a Cary Grant impression – speak to him on the phone. Nabors then admits that they called the husband ahead of time and told him to play along, and then awards the woman her prize, a new stove.

In a "Nabors' Neighbors" segment, an announcer jokes about the soap opera-like stories playing out among unsuspecting audience members, after which Nabors and Burnett sing "You Make Me Laugh" together. Nabors then introduces Susan Ford, daughter of President Gerald Ford, who introduces a series of funny childhood photographs of Nabors, Reynolds, and Burnett. Nabors and Reynolds note that both of their fathers were policemen and share stories about their dissimilar authoritative styles.

Next, Reynolds, whose new film "The End" (1978) is soon to be released, participates in a few off-the-cuff "screen tests," in which he portrays a "despondent" man whose girlfriend has just left him. Female audience members portray his hot-tempered ex in two versions of the scene, and Reynolds is overcome with laughter when the third woman is guest Betty White.

Nabors sits down with White, Reynolds, and Burnett and chats about being recognized as celebrities. Reynolds shares a story about being mistaken for Marlon Brando, while Burnett recalls a prank with Nabors gone awry. Nabors then closes the show with another song. Includes commercials and promos.
