BARETTA: WOMAN IN THE HARBOR (TV)

Summary

One in this police drama series which derives its style from the unorthodox ways of Tony Baretta, an undercover police detective. In this episode, Baretta reunites with an old pal, parole officer John Shockley, who reveals that he just spotted one of his former parolees, Virginia Marriott, in Mexico – six months after her supposed suicide by drowning. Minutes later, Shockley is run down by a car, and he offers some parting words for his family before dying in Baretta's arms. Deeply distressed, Baretta ignores Shiller's demands to avoid the all-too-personal case and, donning a semi-convincing cowboy persona, visits Virginia's mother, who casually confirms that her daughter is dead and was, unhelpfully, cremated. Baretta next questions retired cop Ed Borgue, who signed off on "Virginia's" death certificate, though he seems to doubt that her fingerprint identification could have been forged.

Later, Baretta is abducted by a gaggle of hired crooks, who aggressively demand to know why he has opened the Marriott case, and even his admission of the full truth of her faked death and Shockley's murder doesn't quite convince them. A mysterious woman tips him off on where to find the head thug, Daniel Treach, and Baretta impersonates a "jive" masseuse and incapacitates Treach, forcing him to admit that he was hired by one Carl Brazil. He eventually finds his way to Brazil, who reluctantly admits that Virginia, his former "bagwoman," disappeared with $600,000 of his ill-gotten money and then turned up dead, though Baretta bluntly sets him straight.

Baretta finally concludes that Borgue, who is living far above his means, was behind the scheme and helped Virginia to fake her death. Borgue denies it, but Baretta, wanting revenge for Shockley's needless death, informs his former friend that he has "sold" him to the powerful Brazil. Later, disguised as Mexican hippie "Ziggy Rainbow," Baretta follows Borgue all the way to Mexico, where he reunites with Virginia, clearly his lover. When Baretta tails them to their hidden love nest, they end up in a dramatic shoot-out that leaves Borgue dead. Saddened by the death of yet another former friend, Baretta heads home and gives Mrs. Marriott the somewhat good news about her daughter, who in turn informs on Brazil's extensive criminal dealings.
