BETTE: BIG BUSINESS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a "divine" celebrity named Bette, based on Bette Midler's real-life career.
In this episode, Bette is annoyed to learn that her new film shoot with Mel Gibson has been put on hold; Connie advises her to use the free time to finally write her autobiography. Learning that Rose has to write a school assignment about a notable businesswoman, Bette impulsively decides to hire a fashion designer and launch her own clothing line on the Club Shopping Network; she soon meets with Alex Berringer, an up-and-coming designer who is a huge fan. After much debate and disagreement, Alex finally debuts a garish, outdated jumpsuit. Though horrified by its appearance, Bette decides to carry on with the plan and sell it on TV.
Connie and Oscar are equally alarmed by the heinous outfit when they accompany Bette to the studio, where she meets obnoxious host Jasper Perkins. Unsurprisingly, no one phones in to place an order for the jumpsuit. When Connie, Rose, and Oscar gamely join in to model the outfit, Bette begins to disassemble the piece to show off how its many separate parts can be used in different ways, which finally gets the phones ringings. Alex arrives at the studio and immediately loves Bette's modifications. Rose later announces that she received an A on her paper — in which she described the business' dismal failure. Commercials deleted.
