COSBY: LUCAS RAYMONDICUS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Hilton Lucas, who finds himself retired after his job at the airport is eliminated.

Hilton learns that his old high school is going to the Queens basketball finals for the first time since he was on the team in 1955. He is upset when he reads in Ray Barone’s sports column that his father Frank Barone made the winning basket of that game; Hilton insists that he was the one who did it. Griffin arranges a meeting between Hilton and Ray, and Hilton airs his grievances about what he feels was an inaccurate report in his sports column. Ray states that Frank has told him the story about that basketball game for many years, but Hilton insists that he is wrong and that Frank is lying, and Ray comes to think that this is a distinct possibility. Hilton insists that Frank was only on the team in order to foul the opposing players. Ray brings Frank to meet with Hilton at his house, and Frank argues with Hilton about the circumstances of the basketball game they played in. In private, Frank confesses that he knows he is lying but wants Ray to look up to him in some way, and so asks Hilton to allow Ray to believe that he scored the winning basket, even offering to bribe him. Ruth expresses a similar sentiment, believing that printing a retraction would damage Ray’s reputation and publicly humiliate him. She manages to convince Hilton to go along with Frank’s story, and he tells Ray as much. Satisfied, Ray and Frank leave.

Soon, Ruth receives a letter inviting her to attend a ceremony honoring Hilton’s high school basketball team. Frank is again singled out as the one who scored the winning basket, much to Hilton’s frustration. Hilton calls the school to complain about the ceremony and correct them about the scorer of the basket. He is further incensed when he learns that Frank reported that he was dead to the school. He orders Erica to search for all the remaining members of his old team and contact them. Eventually he finds one person from the team who will be attending the ceremony and knows that he scored the winning basket. Hilton meets with Ray again and informs him that Frank reported him dead, and Frank arrives in order to reinforce his claims. It is discovered that Frank destroyed decades worth of evidence concerning the game just to validate his claims. Ray says he will retract his column but Frank decides to take responsibility for his actions, and says he will announce the truth at the ceremony. Hilton arrives at the ceremony, but finds that the person he found to reinforce his story has been extremely bitter about the game for years, as Hilton did not pass him the ball when he was open. This causes something of an argument between several parties and Ray finally convinces Frank to tell the truth. Commercials deleted.
