TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {PAT BOONE; FERNANDO LAMAS; JEANNE MOREAU; JACK WHEELER} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are singer Pat Boone, actress Jeanne Moreau, actor Fernando Lamas and adventurer/author Jack Wheeler.
In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: why last night's audience was "a little dumb"; the anniversaries of the first session of Congress and the opening of the Suez Canal; the arrival of the Santa Ana winds and unseasonably hot weather; President-Elect Carter's plans to meet with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in his hometown of Plains, Georgia; concern that Carter's Southern heritage will "influence" his presidential decision-making; the hefty $35 million used to elect Carter; how President Ford is spending his last weeks in the White House; Sudan's purchase of weapons from the United States; Walter Mondale's less-than-impressive duties under Carter; and Merv Griffin's theme show, airing on "another network."
Carson then chats with co-host Ed McMahon about McMahon's final performance at Caesar's Palace on the following evening, after which he will return to being "in bondage" on Carson's show; and a letter from a viewer containing some interesting notes about "medieval manners," to which Carson adds several "Emily Postian" updates.
The first guest, Boone, takes the stage and sings "On a Wonderful Day Like Today," and then sits down with Carson to discuss recently becoming a grandfather at the young age of 42, having married young and had four children before graduating college; the perils of caring for infant boys; meeting Kissinger with his wife and daughters; his frantic attempts to arrive on time for the child's birth; and his "fairly recognizable" status as a celebrity, including a funny encounter with an Australian cabbie. Boone then performs "When A Child is Born."
Next, Moreau takes the stage and chats with Carson about his trip to France and his unsuccessful attempts to speak the language; working with Elia Kazan on "The Last Tycoon" (1976); her involvement in an upcoming circus-themed charity event; directing her first film, "Lumière" (1976), which focuses on four female actors; and Carson's role as himself in "Looking for Love" (1964) and whether he might be suited to a dramatic or romantic leading part.
Lamas then joins Carson and the other guests, commenting on his past encounter with Moreau on Carson's show; his upcoming role on the nonsensical but enjoyable "Charlie's Angels"; his disdain for talk shows and preference for watching old movies; his surprise at a certain edited scene in the televised version of "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967); the improving quality of television programs, and why MGM film contracts previously forbade actors from appearing on TV; and his love of tennis and why frequently losing to Carson is not a comment on his "virility."
Finally, Wheeler joins the guests and discusses his decision to climb the Matterhorn at the age of fourteen after being inspired by American adventurer Richard Halliburton; his father's immediate support of his seemingly outrageous idea; why the Matterhorn is "not technically difficult" to climb; his subsequent trip into the jungles of Ecuador; exaggerated myths about the dangers found in nature; his desire to make adventure "real and possible" to the average person; explanation of the process of headhunting, described with the use of a very literal prop; and his plans to make a film about Kilimanjaro. Includes commercials and promos.
