NANNY, THE: MAGGIE'S WEDDING (TV)
Summary
One in this clash-of-cultures comedy series about Fran Fine, a flamboyant, wisecracking Jewish woman from Queens employed as a nanny by the upper-crust widower Maxwell Sheffield of Park Avenue. In this episode, Fran spills the beans to Val about C.C. and Niles' not-so-secret affair. At the same time, Michael tells Maggie that he has landed a job in Japan and must leave within the week, and he proposes marriage to her. Fran is thrilled, though Maxwell is rather less so, saying that his daughter is too young to get married. Nevertheless, Maggie happily accepts and Fran excitedly starts planning the quickie wedding with Val and Sylvia, ignoring Maxwell's protests. They head to the bridal store to find Maggie's dress, and Fran reminisces about buying 14-year-old Maggie one of her first adult outfits. At home, Fran tells Maxwell that his approval is important to Maggie, and Maggie manages to change his mind by telling him that she truly loves Michael and is sure about being with him.
Yetta arrives for the wedding and confuses C.C. for Maggie, revealing that she too knows about the affair with Niles. Michael arrives and tries to make nice with Maxwell, casually revealing that his cousin James Brolin will be attending the ceremony as well. Fran is so overexcited at the thought of having Barbra Streisand in her home that she goes into early labor, and Maxwell drags her to the hospital against her will. It turns out to be a false alarm from the stress, though Fran is told to stay overnight just in case, despite her desperation to get home to see her idol. When Maxwell leaves to get dinner, Fran sneaks out and returns home, but she finds the house empty and receives a call from Maxwell, who explains that everyone, including Barbra, actually came to the hospital to surprise her. The postponed ceremony finally gets underway, and everyone is happy to see Maggie and Michael wed, though Fran is still upset at having missed a chance to see "Babs." The episode concludes with outtakes from the opening scene with Fran and Val. Commercials deleted.
