GILMORE GIRLS: LOVE, DAISIES AND TROUBADOURS {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic series about Lorelai Gilmore, a thirty-something mother raising her teenage daughter Rory under the constant surveillance of her overbearing and very wealthy parents, Emily and Richard. In this episode, Lorelai is rudely awakened at 6:30 in the morning by a loud banging and is shocked to find that Rory is—or was—sleeping through it. She discovers Luke mending her porch rail and berates him for the ungodly hour, but by the time Rory appears, he has vanished, to her great annoyance. Later, at the Independence Inn, she deals with Michel and Sookie, who both seems to have a case of ennui, and fields a flirtatious call from Max. At home, Lorelai chats with Rory and with Luke, who has stopped by for further housework. Rory discovers that Lorelai did not dispose of “the Dean box,” full of mementos and keepsakes from her ex-boyfriend, and though Lorelai apologizes, Rory realizes she is glad to have it.

Later, Rory walks through town with Lane and decides to venture into Doose’s Market when she knows Dean is working, to her friend’s great excitement. She is accosted by an unamused Taylor, however, and finds that Dean is not there, which worries her, but Lane promises that she has never seen Dean with another girl. At Chilton, Tristan flirts with Rory and invites her to a PJ Harvey concert, which Rory flatly declines. Undeterred, he brags to Rory’s classmates that she will accompany him on the date, which angers a jealous Paris. Back in Stars Hollow, Lorelai runs into Rachel, who says she’s had a hard time tracking down Luke as of late. Lorelai promises to pass on the message if she sees him. As they pass the town troubadour, he sings one of his trademark songs, but then is upset to see another troubadour playing on the street corner opposite him.

Lorelai returns home and is startled by Luke, who is fixing her back door lock—which he broke—and at her insistence, admits that he might be “hiding” from Rachel somewhat. He claims to be a “loner,” but she encourages him to try to make things work with her and learn to share his space and his life. Rory, meanwhile, goes to Dean’s house and has an awkward encounter with his little sister, Clara, as she tries to find out the status of Dean’s feelings for her, and she ends up fleeing in embarrassment.

Later, at the town meeting, Lorelai brings contraband snacks, as usual, and the town troubadour states his case, saying that there can only be one street minstrel in town and that there is a “mystique” to the role. Taylor is skeptical, but Rory defends him and blurts out that sometimes people need music to express those emotions for which they don’t have words, and the town approves. After the meeting, Luke returns to his diner and finds that Rachel has packed her bags and is leaving again. She tells him that it is because she can tell he loves someone else, and he unconvincingly tries to deny it. She leaves, telling him not to wait too long “to tell her.”

At Chilton, Madeline and Louise snub Rory, and Paris angrily confronts her, refusing to believe that she is not dating Tristan. She reveals that she has been made editor of the school newspaper, which disturbs aspiring-journalist Rory. At home, Lorelai prepares for a date with Max, but is surprised by Luke, who is fetching his toolbox, and he tells her about breaking up with Rachel. Max arrives and the two men greet each other frostily, neither one amused about the other’s role in Lorelai’s life. Once Luke departs, Max speculates that something went on between them, and they quickly descend into an argument. In frustration, Max says that he is sick of being “derailed” in their relationship and can think of only one solution to their problem: to get married. Stunned, Lorelai protests that a proposal should not be a desperate attempt to end an argument, but should be magical and special with candles and a thousand yellow daisies. They agree to start the evening over and leave for their date.

Back at school, Tristan confronts Rory and demands confirmation of their date, which she refuses. He continues to pester her as she walks outside, and she is shocked to see Dean waiting for her. He says that he thought she was trying to talk to him by coming to his house and by her statement at the town meeting, but thinks she is now with Tristan and starts to leave. She stops him and finally declares that she loves him, and they happily reunite in front of a disappointed Tristan.

At the Independence Inn, Kirk argues with an aggravated Michel about an unauthorized flower delivery, and Lorelai is shocked to find the lobby filled with exactly one thousand yellow daisies. She tearfully calls Max, who offers her an eloquent and official proposal and tells her to think about her answer. She rushes to Luke’s, looking for Rory, and tells him she might have “big, potentially life-changing” news, but that she has to tell her daughter first. She receives a text from Rory and dashes out the door. The two meet in the street, both speechless with excitement over their news. Commercials deleted.
