DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: WHO'S THAT WOMAN? (TV)
Summary
One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. In this episode, Lynette is frustrated, yet again, when Preston and Porter are threatened with expulsion after painting a young classmate blue. Bree gathers her friends to hear Mary Alice's therapy recording, on which she reveals that her real name is "Angela," and the women wonder if Paul, who is planning to leave town, should finally see the infamous note. Edie complains to new roomie Martha about Susan "throwing herself" at Mike, and Gabrielle and John's afternoon rendezvous is interrupted by the arrival of the cable guy – who then slips and injures himself, raising Carlos' suspicions. Martha visits Susan, armed with a mince pie and an alarming accusation: that Susan intentionally burned down her "rival" Edie's house. Bree tries to cover for Rex's abrupt departure, but Andrew, furious that his mother has "driven" his father to leave the family, begins openly defying Bree's rules.
Gabby comes up with a speedy lie when Carlos finds one of John's gym socks under the bed, and Susan, realizing that Martha intends to blackmail her, very reluctantly turns down Mike's offer of a movie date. Lynette considers placing her rambunctious twins on ADHD medication, and Paul reacts with great alarm when the ladies finally sit him down and show him the "I know what you did" note. Bree finds an increasingly rebellious Andrew at a strip club with his friends and decides to embarrass her son with some pointedly moralistic comments about the dancers' challenging lives, thus "killing the vibe." Susan confesses her accidental arson to Julie, who frets that her wayward dad Karl could get custody if the truth comes out, and John is thoroughly flustered when Carlos demands answers – about Gabby's supposed affair with the cable guy.
Julie sneaks into Martha's house to steal back Susan's charred measuring cup, the only definitive evidence of the arson, and Susan, attempting to distract Martha and Edie from entering the home, ends up unintentionally setting Mike and Edie up on a date. Carlos attacks the cable guy in a jealous rage, only to realize that the man is actually gay, and his actions are later misconstrued as a hate crime, much to Gabby's embarrassment. Paul "admits" that Mary Alice's mental illness prompted her to write cruel messages to herself and her family members, though the ladies are highly skeptical of this explanation, and Lynette eventually decides against medicating her kids. Bree and Andrew make amends, to some degree, and Martha is forced to accept temporary defeat when she figures out Susan's trick. Elsewhere, Paul hires a private investigation, the formidable Mr. Shaw, to discover who really wrote the fateful note. Includes commercials and promos.
