BARBARA WALTERS SPECIAL, THE {JAMIE FOXX, WILL FERRELL, TERI HATCHER} (TV)
Summary
One in this occasional series of interview specials, hosted by Barbara Walters. On this program, her twenty-fourth Academy Awards night special, the guests are Will Ferrell, Teri Hatcher and Jamie Foxx. Walters first visits Ferrell at his home, though he pretends to be unprepared for the sit-down, and Walters briefly recaps his "happy and normal childhood" and acceptance into the L.A. comedy group The Groundlings, which then led to his stint on "Saturday Night Live" from 1995 to 2006. Wife Viveca Paulin notes that he is "not funny" at home, and Walters then chats with Ferrell about his talent for impersonations, including Harry Carey and George W. Bush; his infant son; finding happiness in "seemingly mundane" moments; his upcoming role in "Bewitched" alongside Nicole Kidman; what superpowers he would like to have; and his so-called "normal" persona, compared to his over-the-top onscreen antics.
Walters then visits Hatcher and enjoys some s'mores in her 1978 Volkswagen camper van. Born to "brainy-type" parents, Hatcher started her career with a series of brief television roles, including a memorable appearance on "Seinfeld," before landing the role of Lois Lane on "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," which ended in 1997. Walters talks with Hatcher about being a self-described "has-been" until joining "Desperate Housewives" in 2004; her "lowest point" and unsuccessful marriage; her dating woes and rumors about her sex life; her co-stars' description of her as "neurotic"; the great change in her career over the past year; her former sense of herself as "a survivor of bad things"; and her similarities to her "Housewives" character of Susan Mayer.
Finally, Walters sits down with Foxx at the Jazz at Lincoln Center venue, where he performs some piano tunes as they talk. Foxx, nominated for two Academy Awards for his roles as Ray Charles in "Ray" and Max in "Collateral," was raised in Texas by his grandmother, who pushed him to frequently practice his piano skills. He soon pursued comedy and appeared on "In Living Color" and his own sitcom, "The Jamie Foxx Show," and then took more serious roles in "Any Given Sunday" (1999) and "Ali" (2001). Walters chats with Foxx about his "mean" but loving grandmother; his biological parents' largely unexplained absence from his life; his strong bond with his extended family; his early job as a shoe salesman; his fear of romantic commitment; and his interest in using his fame and accomplishment to be a positive role model to young black people. Walters then bids the audience good night, and Foxx closes the evening with a rendition of Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman." Includes commercials and promos.
