BROOKLYN BRIDGE: SYLVIA'S CONDITION (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about a middle-class Jewish family living in Brooklyn, New York, in the 1950s.
In this episode, the family prepares to celebrate Sukkot, which Alan calls "the Jewish Thanksgiving." He takes umbrage at his mother's decision that no television can viewed during the day, particularly since he's eager to watch a Cleveland Browns football match against the New York Giants. As Sophie and Phyllis plan the table's seating arrangement, Nathaniel is overjoyed by the arrival of Aunt Sylvia, despite Sophie's dismissal of her beret-wearing, non-conformist daughter.
As Sylvia distributes copies of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" to the family, she explains that her husband, Joel, has been detained at work and may not be able to attend. Later, as Phyllis reminisces with Sylvia about their childhood, Sylvia admits that she and Joel are getting divorced. Meanwhile, Alan and Nathaniel scheme about how to get out of dinner to watch the game, with chances of sneaking out diminishing after Uncle Willy and Aunt Miriam arrive late.
Sophie refuses to serve the turkey until Joel arrives, at which point Sylvia reveals her news to the group. Sophie rushes from the room, but Jules convinces her to go on with the celebration. The situation goes from bad to worse when Sylvia admits that she's the one filing for divorce. Despite Sylvia's explanations about how she and Joel disagree on all matters, Sophie can't comprehend the situation. Jules maintains that Sylvia's happiness is paramount.
Later, Alan and Nate are sent off to Sid's shop, where they finally get to listen to the game. But on the walk home, they see Joel sitting in his car, across from their home. Joel explains that he still loves Sylvia and will wait for her. Later, the boys try to smuggle him out some food, but the ruse is foiled by Sophie. She convinces Sylvia to take the food to Joel. Watching from the window, Sophie is crestfallen as Sylvia gives Joel the plates before walking away. Commercials deleted.
