SIX FEET UNDER: COMING AND GOING (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, Edie observes that Claire did not fully enjoy their sexual encounter, while elsewhere Ruth invites David to church when George turns her down. An elderly man, James Marshall, drives up to the funeral home and then quietly dies in his car, and Rico awakens with Sophia and admits that Vanessa threw him out over the affair. At church, David imagines rescuing Father Jack from Jake's sudden attack, and Brenda continues trying to repair her relationship with Joe. Ruth is unnerved to find George having a spirited debate with a scantily-clad Anita, and Nate marvels that James "drove himself to his own funeral." Rico and Nate overhear David's tense phone call with Keith, while elsewhere Claire and her friends continue brainstorming a "dark and edgy" concept for an art project. Rico returns home to Vanessa and again tries to explain about his relationship Sophia, and she is outraged to learn that he did in fact sleep with her the previous night.

James' family members are unsurprised by his strange actions and explain that he was always "meticulous" in life, and George dismisses Ruth's concerns about Anita, comparing her to one of his students. While monitoring Celeste, Javier asks prying questions about David and then asks Keith to "help him out" with his own sexual frustrations, though Keith firmly refuses. Brenda joins Nate and Maya for a trip to TravelTown, assuring him that she has no "ulterior motives" now that she has decided to commit fully to Joe. Ruth suggests to Claire that the oft-present Anita should pay some amount of rent and seems shocked to hear that she is now dating Claire's ex, and Keith struggles to manage Celeste's severe mood swings and discontentment with her fame. Vanessa and Angelica head to Sophia's house to confront her about Rico, and things quickly turn violent, with the sisters eventually smashing up Sophia's car. Ruth is upset to find that George has "butchered" one of her favorite trees while gardening, sure that it will never grow back the same. David and Keith's paintball/threesome friend Sarge phones and ends up going to bed with David, though he reacts coldly when David begs him to stay in the morning and tells him that he is "losing it." At the same time, Claire and Edie attempt another intimate encounter, but Claire is still unsatisfied and later realizes that her connection with Edie is more "aesthetic" than sexual.

Brenda tells Joe about her innocent day out with Nate and Maya, and Sophia furiously calls Rico about Vanessa and Angelica's attack, though he blames her for the entire situation and declares that his life is ruined. Celeste confesses her own fears when Keith tells her about David's carjacking, and she easily seduces him, revealing that she is in fact twenty-one. Ruth finds a desolate Rico sleeping in the prep room and invites him upstairs, though she chides him for his affair. David calls Keith in a panic and begs him to come home right away, and James' funeral is a lively, musical affair. Ruth finally blows up at George and tells him that "marriage is not a gas station" to which he can casually come and go, but he angrily retorts that she is "smothering" him with her persistent questions about his past. David and Claire confide in one another about Sarge and Edie, and when Keith tells Duane that he must leave the tour for good, he is surprised to hear that Celeste has already fired him for his "unprofessional" behavior. Joe walks in on Nate and Brenda together and is disgusted at having "wasted his time" on someone who does not care for him, telling her that her addiction is to betrayal, not to sex. Nate returns home to find that Ruth has left the house for parts unknown, leaving behind a note and a badly-burned dinner.
