SEX, LOVE, AND SECRETS: SECRETS {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this drama series about the complicated friendships and romances of a group of twentysomethings living in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Hollywood. In this episode, Rose and Nina meet up at their usual bar, Tiny Planet, and Rose receives repeated calls from her ex-boyfriend, Billy, while her current boyfriend Hank takes the stage with his band, Modern Apes. Charlie meets an attractive woman, Gabrielle, and goes home with her despite her comment about having a boyfriend, and Hank hides a diamond engagement ring as Rose answers one of Billy's calls, only to find that it is someone else, Arturo. Gabrielle is impressed when Charlie describes his sensual reasons for leaving a marketing career to be a hairdresser, but her boyfriend then arrives and she begs her roommate Meg to pretend that Charlie is her date. Charlie quickly adapts to the switch, and Gabrielle's boyfriend is revealed to be Coop, Charlie's best friend. Hank begs his boss to make him a partner at their restaurant, revealing that he plans to propose, and Meg explains to Charlie that Gabrielle is exploiting Coop's feelings for her without any real interest in him. Nina, who lives across the street, spots Charlie sneaking out of the house in the morning.
Rose finds Arturo, who gives her a box inside a paint can and states that she "knows what he wanted," and Gabrielle visits Charlie at work, keen to pick up where they left off. Rose reveals to Nina that the box contains Billy's ashes but admits that she is unsure of what to do with them, and they quickly hide the evidence from Hank. Nina questions Charlie about his affair with Gabrielle, but he brushes it off as a casual matter. On game night, Hank takes offense when Rose seems not to know him very well, and Nina asks Coop about his secret new girlfriend, admitting that she herself has trouble meeting men. She ventures online and finds an interesting man on a website for "mates." Later, Gabrielle cancels plans with Coop, claiming she is ill, but then immediately calls Charlie for a hook-up. She then spots the two men together at the bar, however, and quickly flees. Hank is worried when Rose forgets about their special dinner, wondering if he is making a mistake in settling down with her. Rose, still distracted by Billy's ashes, meets with her work associate, Jolene, who hates her for "stealing" Billy. Overwhelmed with her secrsts, she finally blurts out the truth about their ex's death.
Nina meets up with Milo and is taken aback to realize that he is looking for a roommate rather than a date. As Hank prepares his proposal dinner, Rose asks Jolene about Billy's last wishes, but Jolene coldly informs her that they never discussed the matter. Rose arrives late to Hank's dinner, and he ignores her apologies, clearly hurt. At the restaurant, Jolene reminds Hank that Rose and Billy's relationship was serious, while elsewhere Rose uses music to jog her memory and finally remembers that Billy wanted to be laid to rest in the ocean. Milo returns Nina's forgotten purse and begs to live with her after all, and he eventually charms her over a couple of Manhattans and a cha-cha dance lesson. Rose finally admits the truth to Hank about Billy's ashes, and he accompanies her to the beach, where she admits that she loved Billy despite his faults as she scatters them in the sea. At the bar, Hank hides the diamond ring with Charlie, having realized that he is not ready to propose, and Gabrielle pretends not to know Charlie when Coop introduces his new girlfriend to his friends. Hank dedicates a song to Rose, watched by an angry Jolene, while Milo hides a gun in a drawer in Nina's home. Billy then arrives at the bar as well, apparently not dead after all. Commercials deleted.
