ONE TRUE LOVE (TV)
Summary
This made-for-television romantic comedy film follows the lives of a firefight and a dog trainer after a fateful encounter. The story begins as attorney Phil nags his fiancée Dana Boyer, who gave up her own law career to run a dog kennel, about finalizing plans for their upcoming wedding. Elsewhere, fireman Mike Grant bids farewell to his longtime fiancée Tina and heads out for a drive, and he narrowly avoids hitting a Dalmatian in the road. The other driver, Dana, crashes her car and rolls perilously down a hill, and Mike rushes to her rescue, calming her with a chat about their mutual love of dogs and their dreams for their futures as his fireman colleagues hurry to free her from the car. Lillian and her foster son Corey observe the scene from the road, and Mike later visits his mother Maureen and brother Paul at their family diner and assures them that he is unhurt, though he is preoccupied with thoughts of the mystery woman, whose name he did not learn. Elsewhere, Phil and Dana's friend Lisa visit her in the hospital, and Phil assures her that he will handle the wedding plans as she recovers from her minor injuries. Dana, however, wonders about the fireman and resolves to thank him in person.
Corey scares off a prospective adoptive couple, telling Lillian that he longs to find his birth parents. On a field trip to the firehouse, Corey tells his classmate Laura about his plans, deciding that he must save his money to afford the out-of-town trip to find his mother. Corey meets Mike and, touched by his story, Mike offers him a part-time job helping to restore his old Thunderbird. Back at the kennel, Phil announces that he has booked the church and the wedding date, June 28th, and Dana greets her new temporary dog assistant: Corey. Mike heads to the hospital and sweet-talks a nurse into giving him the mystery woman's name, and Dana talks to Sergeant McGee about the unknown fireman as she returns his newly trained dog, Buster. Corey brings Laura home to Lillian's, explaining that the romance novel-loving older woman is retiring to Florida and unfortunately cannot adopt him. Tina excitedly plans their engagement party, and Paul reveals to Corey that she and Mike have been betrothed for three long years already. Phil pressures Dana to try an expensive wedding gown, brushing aside her statement that she does not wish to return to practicing law and has found happiness working with dogs.
McGee provides Dana with Mike's information, though Lisa informs her that she clearly desires a last-minute fling with the hunky fireman and will ruin her future if she meets with Mike. Corey tells Mike and Paul about Laura's intense crush on him, and Paul reveals that his brother believes in the idea of "one true love," with Mike unconvincingly stating that he has already found his in Tina. Corey confides in Tina about his dream of reuniting with his birth mother, and when she confesses that she too has a fantasy of finding her soulmate, Corey notes that he has recently met someone who shares her belief. Later, Mike sneaks away from his engagement party to call Dana, though he gets Phil on the line instead. Paul encourages Mike to make their mother happy and set a date, and Mike impulsively declares to the crowd that he and Tina will finally wed – on June 28th. Dana drags Lisa along to Grant's Diner, hoping to casually "run into" her rescuer, but Phil barges in and presents her with an ostentatious wedding band. Dana talks to Maureen, who confirms that her fireman son is getting married at the end of June, and Dana later confesses to Corey that she experienced "something she'd never felt before" during her brief moments with Mike.
Corey awkwardly dodges Laura's advances and tells her instead about his image of his mother, saying that she is "real" and loves dogs, hopefully. Dana and Tina unknowingly encounter one another at the tuxedo store, and Corey finally puts the pieces together when Mike's fireman friends tease him about the car-crash incident and Mike explains that he saved a woman for whom he then developed "crazy feelings." Corey desperately tells Lillian that his two new friends are marrying the wrong people, though Lillian makes him swear not to tell them of his findings. Corey decides to meddle in an indirect fashion and convinces Mike to visit the kennel on the grounds of a fire-safety inspection, though he is shown around the place by Lisa in Dana's absence. Dana is upset when Phil makes an offer on a new house without consulting her, telling him that he is "such a lawyer" and does not listen to her, and Mike adopts the Dalmatian, "Lucky," though Tina protests that she is "a little allergic." Finding that he is not quite housebroken, Mike takes Lucky to the kennel for training and finally encounters Dana face-to-face. They spend an enjoyable afternoon together, discussing the odd coincidence of their wedding days, and they soon realize that they actually met many years ago when young Dana visited Grant's Diner.
Mike vents to Corey about his newfound feelings, worried that he will break Tina's heart if he confesses that he has fallen in love with a near-stranger. Tina, however, confronts Mike about his obvious unhappiness and admits that she herself has feelings for someone else, hinted to be Mike's own brother Paul. They amicably decide to break up, though elsewhere Dana refuses to believe Corey's news, firmly stating that she is marrying Phil no matter what. Corey prepares to head for Seattle to find his birth mother in person, and when June 28th arrives, Dana heads to the church and Mike chases Lucky to Dana's doorstep, sure that he has missed his chance. At the altar, however, both Dana and Phil decide not to "hold their peace" and mutually admit that they are not right for one another, and Dana flees the church and heads for home. She finds Mike waiting there and announces that she too has called off her wedding, and they finally share a kiss and confess their love for one another. Later, Corey is delighted when Dana and Mike ask him to join their family instead, and he decides to give things with Laura a try after all. Commercials deleted.
