SIX FEET UNDER: DEATH WORKS OVERTIME (TV)
Summary
One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, three different people die in separate incidents in rapid succession, while elsewhere Nate's fear mounts as Lisa remains missing. Ruth remains confident that there is a simple explanation, and Rico and Angelica accompany Vanessa to the doctor, where she is told that she is mixing too many medications in a potentially dangerous way. Arthur attempts to help when Nate is distracted during an intake, and Keith returns from San Diego and offers to assist with the search for Lisa, though tells David that they must have a serious talk about their relationship in the wake of the fight with his parents. Brenda, wanting to escape Billy, rents a questionable apartment, and Russell continues begging Claire to forgive him for his encounter with Olivier and tells her that he cannot live without her, though she coldly rejects him.
Margaret summons Brenda to help her dispose of Bernard's ashes, telling her that she must tolerate Billy's presence for a short while, and Claire is exasperated when Olivier tells her to choose her own grade, pointing out that he has broken school rules by sleeping with Russell. He counters that she "needs real pain" and is less artistically brave than Russell is, and she defiantly gives herself an A. Nate continues contacting the police, and Rico struggles to handle the sudden upswing in business and confides in David about Vanessa's depression. Claire accuses Ruth of being in denial when she maintains her optimistic outlook about Lisa, and Keith tries to determine her location using a map and her credit cards. Nate quickly rejects Brenda when she calls and tries to distract himself by asking David about his tension with Keith, and David sadly admits that they might not be "meant to be" after all. Nate briefly imagines an emotional reunion with Lisa, but then learns that her car has been found abandoned. Angelica decides to cheer Vanessa up with a shopping trip, and Margaret observes the discomfort between her children as they argue about the best location for Bernard's ashes, and she eventually dumps them over the side of her balcony.
Claire is shocked to find that she is pregnant, though she tells David only about Russell's infidelity, and as they attempt to juggle two funeral services at once, David wonders if Lisa might have ended her life because of her unhappiness with Nate. Nate learns that Lisa's belongings, plus an errant can of soda, are still in her car, though the deputy tells him that foul play is still not definite. Billy informs an upset Brenda that he is in love with her but knows that he must "let it go," and David starts to believe that something bad has in fact happened to Lisa. Rico is outraged to find that Vanessa has made several extravagant purchases with their credit card, though Angelica argues that she deserves them, and Rico heads to dance class alone. One of the funeral guests, George Sibley, returns in search of his glasses, and he ends up comforting Ruth when she unexpectedly breaks down over Lisa in front of him. David declines to stay overnight with Keith, and he and Claire head to Nate's home to keep their heartbroken brother company as he continues to worry.
