ER {E.R.}: FIRST SNOWFALL (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital.

In this episode, Lockhart searches desperately for her missing brother Eric, whom she was forced to have arrested by MPs when he went AWOL from the Air Force. When she decides to head out to the Midwest to find him, Carter sends Gallant, an Army medic, along with her, promising to follow soon. Chicago then receives three feet of snow. Nathan struggles with his Parkinson's symptoms as the doctors attempt to fight their way into the hospital, and Lockhart receives conflicting information before finally learning that Eric has been sent to a military hospital. There, she runs into their mother, Maggie. Back in Chicago, Corday and the others rush to treat a mother and her two young sons, Matt and Toby, who were struck by a drunk driver while building a snowman.

Lockhart is frustrated to learn that Maggie initially interpreted Eric's mental health symptoms as situational post-traumatic stress disorder, rather than inherited bipolar depression, thus leading to improper treatment. The boys' father rushes into the hospital and is overwhelmed to learn that his wife has died and Toby is brain-dead, but his heart and lungs can be used to save a critically injured Matt. Corday tasks Nathan with gently convincing the traumatized man to give consent for the transplant, while Lockhart urges Gallant to head home and leave her to handle her disastrous family. Eric is displeased to see Lockhart, particularly when she urges him to return to Chicago with her for treatment; he asserts that he "doesn't need help." Nathan is angered when the drunk driver, blithely unaware of his fatal actions, begins hassling him about his hand tremors; elsewhere, Lockhart considers having Eric committed, and Maggie tries to remind her that he must be the one to seek treatment for it to be effective.

Nathan is embarrassed when he mildly injures a young patient, Kiley, while taking her temperature, and Corday bonds with the grieving father as she describes struggling with a "big, relentless wave" of sorrow after Mark's death. Eric is sent back to military jail when he demands his due process, refusing to admit that he is "crazy" like his mom. Maggie acknowledges that she passed on her illness to her son and must now "be his mother" however possible, including testifying about his mental state. Lockhart is deeply relieved when Carter finally arrives, and Corday informs Nathan that he has, of course, failed his evaluation. But he has proven himself to have a gift for compassionate care through his treatment of the widowed father. Nathan returns to Kiley and lets her "help" with the rest of her exam, and Corday allows him to be the one to shock Matt's new heart, that of his brother, into life. Commercials deleted.
