ER {E.R.}: A THOUSAND CRANES (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital.

In this episode, Carter tells Lewis that he intends to formally propose to Lockhart, and when Chen and Kovac venture over to Magoo's diner for a meal, they find the aftermath of a deadly shoot-out. Maggie, still in town in search of Eric, is amazed to learn of Carter's rooftop proposal, though Lockhart demurs that he "didn't mean it." Trina, the sole survivor of the dining shooting, is rushed in for treatment, and teen cancer patient Sean Simmons, who is departing the hospital for at-home hospice care, visits Lewis. Elsewhere, Gallant stops Pratt from brawling with their opponents during a pick-up basketball game, and as the doctors frantically work on Trina, Chen tells the police that she may have spotted the diner shooters escaping, describing them as two black men in a gold 4x4. As a result, Pratt and Gallant are pulled over and, when the cops find Pratt's shirt bloodied from the fight, they are roughly arrested and questioned.

Weaver instructs Kovic to visit the hospital shrink. Once they are released, a furious Gallant plans to report the police officers for their aggressive behavior, though Pratt reminds him that they will always be seen as "suspects." Though warned to stay away from him, Lewis decides to leave the hospital with Sean in tow to give him a final day of fun, and Lockhart, swamped with work, bids Maggie a hasty goodbye as she prepares to depart for Minnesota. Carter offers to drive her to the bus stop, and Kovic brusquely tells Meyers about the many tragedies he has suffered, aware that the psychologist cannot repair what is "gone or broken" from his life. Corday suggests that the cops' racial profiling of Gallant and Pratt was warranted under the dire circumstances, and Pratt is upset to learn that it was Chen's uncertain comment about the perpetrators that led to his and Gallant's detainment.

Maggie and Carter, stuck in traffic, discuss his plans to propose to Lockhart, and Maggie urges him not to attempt to "fix" her or expect her to change. At an amusement park, Sean tells Lewis about Sadako Sasaki, the Japanese girl who famously attempted to fold a thousand paper cranes in order to receive her wish of being cured of cancer; when Officer Mitch Palnick, the same man who hauled Pratt and Gallant in, is brought to the hospital with serious injuries resulting from a high-speed chase with the real killers, Pratt sternly reminds Gallant that they must treat all patients regardless of their actions. Gallant makes an observant call that saves Palnick from an unnecessary invasive surgery, though Palnick still refuses to apologize for his actions, feeling that he was justified in questioning them. Lewis brings Sean home and, despite his mother's frustration, shares a tender goodbye with him; though Carter surprises Lockhart with an intimate dinner, he cannot bring himself to propose. Palnick's young partner semi-apologizes to the two doctors, and Chen and Pratt make up, relieved that the challenging day is over. Lewis spreads Sean's not-quite-one-thousand paper cranes in the river, and Lockhart, upon finding Carter's diamond ring, is troubled to realize that he chose not to formalize his rash declaration of wishing to marry her.
