COMMANDER IN CHIEF: NO NUKES IS GOOD NUKES (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about America's first female president, Mackenzie Allen.

Continued from B:88401. North Korea is mobilizing troops and the Chinese may withdraw support for Mackenzie’s plan. She communicates with various world leaders to try and find a solution. Rod invites Mackenzie’s old friend Owen, an expert on North Korea, to Washington. Mackenzie’s staff debate amongst themselves over the extent of their military action, but Mackenzie’s sole focus is getting the submarine crew home safely. Gardner recommends admitting that Korean sovereignty was violated in an attempt to get them to cooperate with the rescue, but Owen believes they would merely take advantage of the situation.

Mrs. Templeton tries to persuade Jayne to go work for Nathan again. The Chinese ambassador says that publicly helping the United States in the submarine rescue presents new complications to their original agreement. Nathan deduces that the Koreans discovered the submarine’s location via a leak in the Chinese government. Mackenzie suggests that China could secretly aid the United States by tethering their rescue vehicle to an American ship; the United States would provide a cover story should their involvement be discovered. She will still allow weapons exports for the Chinese as well. The ambassador vows to do his best to convince his government.

The military reports that Korean troop shave fired on an American AWAC, but no casualties have been reported. Mackenzie gets in contact with the submarine captain, who says he and his crew are ready to destroy the submarine should the rescue effort fail. The Chinese come through on their part of the plan, but the joint chiefs want the United States to respond to the downing of the AWAC. Gardner recommends destroying the sub to prevent a full-scale war, but Nathan disagrees. Mackenzie agrees with Nathan’s assessment of the situation. She speaks with the Prime Minister of Japan, where mass panic has already begun.

Dickie and Kelly work on the public relations angle of the crisis. Jayne comes back to Nathan and apologizes, asking to work with him again. Mackenzie proposes sending the rescue vehicle into Korean waters without a battleship escort in a move that will ensure secrecy but result in the certain destruction of the rescue vehicle should North Korea discover it. Mackenzie speaks with the UN representative of North Korea, making it clear that all she wants is the rescue of the submarine crew and not an armed conflict. She makes offers to North Korea and says the United States will not retaliate for the downed AWAC. She adds that her terms are non-negotiable.

North Korea moves warships into position, awaiting the rescue vehicle. Countries all over Asia are in crisis as fear of a nuclear exchange spreads. Mackenzie takes a moment to reassure her children that everything will be all right. The North Korean representative gets on the phone and asks Mackenzie for a formal public apology for the incursion into North Korean waters. Mackenzie will comply, but only upon completion of the rescue. The Korean warships are ordered to back off while the rescue takes place.

The attempt is a success and the submarine captain thanks Mackenzie via a videoconference before they head home. Everyone in the situation room breathes a sigh of relief; General Krieger thanks Mackenzie for all her effort. Nathan is surprised to learn that Mackenzie was genuine in her agreement to issue an apology to North Korea. Dickie sees the video conversation between Mackenzie and the submarine crew on the news and is thrilled to see something this positive for her presidential image. At a press conference, Mackenzie issues the apology she promised and clarifies her position on the whole matter.

Mackenzie announces to her staff that she intends to run for re-election after all. Jayne and Nathan discuss the crisis and how they stand on Mackenzie. Mackenzie reads a bedtime story to Amy. Rebecca and Mackenzie reconcile. The episode ends as Mackenzie has cookies with her mother, talking about the last few days. Includes commercials.
