TRIPPING THE RIFT: GOD IS OUR PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of this comedic animated science-fiction series about a crew of misfit alien criminals traveling the galaxy. Chode becomes interested in traveling on the maiden voyage of a time-travel vessel going back to the beginning of time. He elects to take along Gus, who believes in God, whereas Chode subscribes to the theory of the Big Bang; they are going back in time to determine which of them is correct. They go to the nearest timeport, disguising themselves to avoid detection by the Confederation, looking to arrest Chode for the crime of stealing Six. After getting through security, Chode and Gus attend the flight, but the captain turns back at the last moment and returns to the present. However, Chode coerces Gus into sneaking into the cockpit and taking the craft back to the beginning of time themselves. During the flight, Chode sees another copy of the plane piloted by himself racing past him, and is mystified as to its meaning. They arrive at the beginning of time, shrouded in darkness. Chode asks that there be light and the place is illuminated, and the universe begins. God does not appear to be present and Chode is convinced that he was right about the nonexistence of God, much to Gus’s chagrin. Unbeknownst to them, their ship accidentally collided with God and killed him. They return to the present and find that things have been altered: people are generally friendlier and happier; Six and T’Nuk are in a stable same-sex relationship, and Whip is now the captain of the ship. They realize they must have changed something in the past and review video footage of their trip, discovering that they accidentally killed God. Chode concludes that without God, people have no more compunctions or taboos, and are thus naturally good. He and Gus revel in this discovery, realizing that they are the only ones who can truly understand evil and thus enjoy it. However, Chode informs Whip of his discovery and the news spreads quickly. Soon the galaxy is rife with people indulging in their newfound sins, including theft, rape, and murder. Chode and Gus resolve to go back in time again to stop themselves from murdering God. However, God is one step ahead of them and uses the arrival of the second ship to trick Chode and Gus into running themselves over and killing themselves. Commercials deleted.
