BOSTON LEGAL: IVAN THE INCORRIGIBLE (TV)
Summary
One in this darkly comic series focusing on a firm of brilliant but emotionally-challenged attorneys in Boston. In this episode, Shirley is unconcerned when Denny catches her in the midst of her affair with Ivan, though she is alarmed when Ivan's not-so-ex-wife Missy arrives at her office and asks for her help, believing that her husband is cheating. Jerry returns to the office in unusually friendly spirits and Alan notes that his behavior modification therapy is going well. Jerry explains that he has been practicing banking law, but has recently been assigned a trial case and is highly nervous about it, having no talent for litigation and "cheap theatrics." Alan offers to be his co-counsel, and they meet with Ande Mkeba, an immigrant from Senegal whose son's murderer got off on a technicality. When the killer, Kevin Armus, boarded Mkeba's city bus, Mkeba attacked him and was charged with attempted murder. Elsewhere, Brad meets pretty new paralegal Audrey Pugliese and ends up asking her out, though he is flustered by her blunt anatomical language and seeks Denise's advice about it. Alan is pleased to discover that he is up against A.D.A. Kupfer, whom he has bested before, but things go quickly downhill when Jerry has an outburst in court, frustrated by the judge's fidgeting. Alan intervenes, however, and Mkeba is released on bail.
Shirley confronts Ivan, who admits that he and Missy are "on different pages" about the state of their marriage, and she orders him to tell her the truth. In court, Armus claims Mkeba's attack on him was random, and Alan takes over when Jerry is too anxious to question him, pointing out that Armus is guilty of Mkeba's son's murder despite the fact that the charges were dropped. Under Alan's questioning, Armus states that Mkeba "completely lost control" as he beat him, which supports Alan's argument of temporary insanity. Missy tells Shirley that Ivan has sworn to her that he is not cheating, but admits that she still has a "squinch of a doubt" and asks for Shirley's advice. Shirley advises her to create a "post-nup," and Ivan is disturbed to learn that he will lose everything he most loves if he is found to be straying. Alan assists Jerry as he rehearses his questioning of Mkeba, and Brad tells Denise that he and Audrey are now dating, but he is deeply unnerved by her repeated use of "that word" and is considering ending things. On the stand, Mkeba talks about his son's murder and says that Armus boarding his bus was "a sign from God," but Jerry presses him to mention the specific details and, getting flustered, accidentally blurts out that Mkeba's actions were motivated by revenge rather than momentary madness.
Jerry then panics that he has ruined the case, and Alan admits that things are going badly. He privately tells Mkeba that they cannot hope to win now, and tells him that his only hope is to flee back to Senegal. Missy tells Ivan that she will sign a post-nup as well to prove her love for him, agreeing to hand over all of her beloved Broadway memorabilia if she cheats, and, feeling guilty, he assures her that he will not break her heart. Brad awkwardly attempts to end things with Audrey and explains that her language "creeps him out," but she points out that men frequently discuss their own anatomies and tells him to grow up. When Mkeba goes "missing," Kupfer immediately guesses that Alan told him to run, though Alan denies everything and the judge is forced to adjourn the case indefinitely. Ivan tells Shirley that he is going to sign Missy's post-nup, though seems intent on being "really careful" in continuing their affair. Brad experiences regret and attempts to patch things up with Audrey, but she refuses unless he says "the word" aloud. Alan tells Jerry that despite his occasional outbursts, he is still "innocent" and not callous like most lawyers, and Jerry decides to return to non-confrontational finance law. Ivan and Missy sign their papers and seal the deal with a song, and Shirley is uncomfortable when Missy thanks her, wondering if she knows the truth. Denny asks Shirley about Ivan, and she assures him that she is always "on the market" for him. He then chats with Alan about his "misplaced" client, and they both ponder the merits of running off to a peaceful island and enjoying a simpler life. Includes commercials and promos.
