LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN {NICOLAS CAGE, JERRY LEWIS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by David Letterman. This program features actor Nicolas Cage and comedian Jerry Lewis. In his opening monologue, Letterman touches upon the following topics: the unusually busy hurricane season; the arrival of two dozen sumo wrestlers for a competition at Madison Square Garden; the arrest of disgraced former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on conspiracy charges; reports that maligned President Bush is "peevish and melancholy"; and useless real estate mogul Donald Trump's $1.5 million price tag for a "how to get rich" speech.
Letterman then discusses the current World Series, including White Sox player Scott Podsednik's walk-off home run; a visit from CBS president Les Moonves, in his role as "Pascual" on a 1976 episode of "Cannon"; reports that The New York Times will begin publishing smaller papers; the recent motion picture adaptation of the popular video game "Doom" (2005); and Trump's disdain for Martha's Stewart's spin-off of his reality program "The Apprentice."
Letterman then chats with stage manager Biff Henderson about his recent ride in the Fujifilm Blimp; in a clip, Henderson talks with pilots John McGuirk and Mike Dawson, who are unable to define the "point" of the airship, and then flies over the Ed Sullivan Theater itself.
The first guest, Cage, joins Letterman and discusses his impressive mustache, grown for his role in the upcoming "World Trade Center" (2006); the recent birth of his second son, Kal-El, named for the character of Superman; his dislike of discussing his family in public settings; his unusual inspiration from a cobra attack to pursue exercise and weight loss; why he is an animal lover; acquiring his advanced diver's certificate while suffering a bout of nitrogen narcosis; his new film "The Weather Man" (2005), in which his character tries to mend his broken family and takes up archery as an emotional outlet; channeling his own experience with two divorces into the performance; and his pride in the low-budget film and enjoyment of working with co-stars Hope Davis and Michael Caine. A clip from "The Weather Man" is then shown.
Next, Lewis takes the stage and comments on his recent 74-pound weight loss; his consternation at never receiving his union dues for appearing on Letterman's show, and his compromise on a $15 cash payment; his third book "Dean & Me: A Love Story," about his tumultuous relationship with comedy partner Dean Martin, "the most underrated performer in show business"; a brief description of their early work together, in which Lewis portrayed a "heckler" to Martin's straight-man lounge singer; the challenges of performing eight high-energy shows per day; his and Martin's notorious womanizing during the height of their careers; experiencing marriage and fatherhood at the age of nineteen; the reasons for his acrimonious split and 20-year estrangement from Martin, which ended with their reconciliation in the late 1980s; and the tragic 1987 death of Martin's son Dean Paul Martin. A clip of Martin and Lewis on a September 1950 episode of "The Colgate Comedy Hour" is then shown. Includes commercials and promos.
