ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES, THE: CHAPTER SIXTEEN: TALES OF INNOCENCE {NORTHERN ITALY, JUNE 1918 AND MOROCCO, 1918} (TV)

Summary

This direct-to-video feature is an edited combination of episodes from "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," the adventure series about a young American who travels the world and becomes involved with the historical figures and events of his time. This installment contains the flashback scenes from the episodes "Northern Italy, June 1918" and "Morocco, 1918." The program begins as Indiana, still under the guise of "Captain Defence" and undercover for the Belgian army as a German officer, meets with his leader and tells him about an upcoming attack. Later, he visits his lady love, Giulietta, though he is distressed to learn that she has another beau. At a bar, he encounters another American, "Ernie" Hemingway, who advises him to be bold and outdo the other suitor to win her heart, and the two bond over drinks. Indiana continues his espionage work, though he is distracted by thoughts of Giulietta. He takes her out for the afternoon and once they evade her watchful grandmother, he earns a kiss when he tells her of his upcoming dangerous mission. Hemingway derides this method, however, saying that she will now turn to her other fellow for comfort, and urges Indiana to write her a passionate letter, offering him a few choice lines. After narrowly escaping danger on the battlefield, he receives an invitation to Giulietta's birthday dinner. He decides to impress her with his skills on the soprano saxophone, but when he arrives for the dinner, Giulietta's family panics, realizing that they have accidentally invited both of her suitors.

Indiana is shocked when Hemingway arrives at the house as well, realizing that he is the "rat" who is trying to steal Giulietta. The two friends turn on one another and compete fiercely for her attention, showing off their musical skills, plying her with gifts and sabotaging one another's dates. They finally decide to confront her together and allow her to choose between them, but they are both stunned to discover that she is in fact engaged to a childhood friend. Indiana and Ernie swear that their friendship is over, but they are both then injured in a bombardment and make up, deciding not to pursue the same woman again. Indiana is then shipped to Venice, enjoying a romance with his nurse along the way, and is then assigned to North Africa, learning that the Germans are "stirring up trouble there." When he arrives in Casablanca, he is told that the rebel tribesmen are being supplied with heavy artillery, and he is tasked with determining the source and given the identity of "Captain Duval" of the Foreign Legion. As he rides through the desert, he and his men are captured by local tribesman and threatened with death, but Indy cleverly escapes with the aid of some schnapps and a cigarette. He manages to recover a saddlebag containing letters that reveal details about the stolen weapons, and is surprised to learn that they come from a French source. He leaves for headquarters to update his superiors, and they are distressed to hear that there may be a traitor amongst the Legionnaires.

Indiana is then assigned to act as a liaison officer to an American woman, novelist Edith Wharton, and visit a Sheikh Kamal to determine his role in the smuggling. Indiana and Edith bond during their voyage, and he tells her about his military service and his many loves, including Giulietta and Vicky. He explains his desire to become an archeologist, and they explore local ruins and markets together. A young reporter, Lowell Thomas, joins them and says that he wishes to write a "human interest" article on Edith's adventures, but she sternly informs him of the difference between her intimate fictional writing and his desire to invade her privacy and exploit her actions. They meet with the Sheikh, who is impressed with Edith's forthright nature, and during a lavish dinner party, she talks with the Sheikh about breaking the "rules" of society and falling in love with the wrong person as Indiana sneaks off to examine the armory, forging Colonel Bonnet's signature to gain access. He finds a hidden trapdoor and underground bunker where the stolen weapons are kept and transported, later confessing to Kamal that he is a spy and that someone with official access to the weaponry is the traitor. He explains that the traitor will have a telltale red sand in their boots and guesses that more than one person is in on it, and when Bonnet's treachery is revealed, he tries to flee and he and Indiana engage in a swordfight, with Bonnet eventually falling to his death from a balcony. Indiana prepares to leave, and he and Edith consider their attraction to one another but decide not to act upon it, as the timing is poor for both of them. Lowell promises not to write about Edith's adventures after all, and she shares a final kiss with Indiana before he departs.
