GREY'S ANATOMY: I AM A TREE (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, an unemployed and grief-stricken Izzie bakes obsessively as Cristina is caught in a compromising position in Burke's hospital room by his parents. Meredith resolves to choose between Derek and Finn, and Addison requests the day off to mourn the official demise of her marriage at the Emerald City Bar. A patient, Dana Seabury, indulges herself with cake, marveling that she has developed lung cancer despite living a healthy and boring life. George attempts to convince Bailey to talk to Webber about Izzie, and the doctors check in on another patient, Benjamin O'Leary, whose brain tumor causes him to offer frank and unrestrained commentary on everything. Bailey is outraged to see Meredith's underwear from the ill-fated prom night pinned to the announcement board, though Callie quickly claims that they are hers. Cristina is again embarrassed when Burke's mother chastises her for using Bailey's "Nazi" nickname, and when Mrs. Burke summons her to a coffee date, Cristina demands that Burke "save her" from the encounter. Meredith confronts Derek about their dalliance, and he assures her that he is officially ending things with Addison that day, then telling Webber that Meredith is "not an affair."
Benjamin observes the tension between Meredith and Derek and bluntly urges her to pursue him, and George wonders jealously how Callie's underwear might have ended up on the board. A teenager impaled on a tree is then rushed into the ER, and Bailey fiercely scolds Alex when he shoves the boy's father out of the way. Mrs. Burke questions Cristina about her marriage plans and accuses her of being selfish about her own needs, and Cristina resolves to stand up to her. Dana, tired of "following the rules," decides to leave the hospital against medical advice to go enjoy her life, and Meredith announces that she is choosing Derek, but then has second thoughts when she heads home to check on Izzie and finds that Finn has brought lunch for her friend out of kindness. Bailey updates the tree-boy's father, Mr. Hernandez, explaining that he is still in surgery but alive, and Izzie encounters an extremely drunk Addison when she arrives at the bar with a muffin delivery. Cristina is startled when Benjamin offers some unexpectedly wise advice about supporting one's partner in their time of need, and Derek operates on him as Bailey and Alex work on the teenager.
At the bar, Addison pours her heart out to an exasperated Bailey as Meredith advises George to get over his jealousy and spend the evening with Callie. When flipping a coin proves unsatisfying, Meredith decides to be "honest" like Benjamin about her conflict over Derek and Finn, though Cristina points out that Benjamin was simply ill and in fact died in surgery. Mr. Hernandez admits to Bailey that he could have prevented his son's accident with more decisive parenting, and when Alex runs into Dana, he opts to "help" her in living her life to the fullest. Webber catches Callie in her basement "home" and tells her that she must leave, though admits that he respects her determination, and George barges in at exactly the wrong moment. Meredith informs Derek and Finn that she plans to continue dating both of them, and Cristina bids a polite good-night to Burke and his mother, deciding not to confront her after all. Bailey visits Izzie and admits her own sense of guilt in the LVAD wire fiasco, firmly stating that she should return to work. Derek finds Addison at a hotel and apologizes to her, stating that their marriage's failure is his fault, though he is then shocked to find that she has been joined by her lover and his own best friend, Mark Sloan.
