LOST: FLASHES BEFORE YOUR EYES (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Hurley and Charlie are summoned by Locke, Desmond and Sayid, who explain that Eko is dead, having been killed "by the island." Desmond suddenly sprints back to the beach and saves Claire from drowning, leaving Charlie mystified as to how he knew that she was in danger. Claire finds Desmond brooding over his marina photograph of Penny and thanks him for his help, and Charlie dismisses Hurley's claims of Desmond's precognitive abilities and decides to uncover the truth. Desmond takes them up on their "peace offering" when he sees that Charlie is offering MacCutcheon whiskey, and the three friends get drunk around the fire. When Charlie asks, Desmond claims that he merely heard Claire's cries for help from afar, but Charlie gets increasingly angry and calls him a "coward," prompting Desmond to attack him in a fury. In the recent past, Desmond bids farewell to Locke in the hatch and turns the failsafe key, and he finds himself in a confused state back in his former off-island life with Penny. He prepares for a job interview with her powerful father Charles, though continues experiencing strange flashes of the island, including the fateful numbers.
Widmore questions Desmond sternly, noting that he has no military or professional experience, and mentions that his company is sponsoring an around-the-world boat race. When Desmond announces that he wishes to marry Penny, Charles produces his expensive MacCutcheon whiskey and coldly informs him that he is not worthy of the drink, let alone of his daughter. Storming out of the office, Desmond runs into a street musician, who turns out to be none other than Charlie, and begins to panic as he has strange memories of meeting the apparent stranger on an island containing a hatch. Desperate for answers, he seeks out his physicist friend Donovan and questions him about time-travel, but Donovan assures him that it is impossible. Upon hearing "Make Your Own Kind of Music" on a jukebox, Desmond declares that he has lived the evening before and can predict its events, though his claims prove incorrect. Back at home, Penny dismisses her father's behavior and declares that she loves Desmond all the same, and he soon heads to a shop in search of an engagement ring. However, the proprietor, Ms. Hawking, informs him that he is not meant to buy the ring and instead will leave Penny, sign up for Widmore's race, end up on the island and push the button for several years before turning the key – or else risk all of their lives.
Shocked, Desmond demands to know how she knows so much about his life, and she explains that the universe has a way of "course-correcting" and making certain unchangeable things happen. He swears that he loves Penny and will marry her no matter what, but Ms. Hawking declares that pushing the button is "the only truly great thing he will ever do." Desmond leaves and, after pondering a military service poster, takes the marina backdrop photograph with Penny. Realizing that they are not "meant to be together," he abruptly ends the relationship and assures her that she deserves better, but she angrily accuses him of cowardice and points out that she has never cared about his lack of money and prospects. Desmond heads to a bar to drown his sorrows and, when his previous predictions come true, realizes that he mistook the night and actually can predict the future, meaning that he can mend things with Penny after all. He intervenes in a bar fight and is struck in the head, however, and is heartbroken to awaken back on the island without her. At the campfire, Desmond gives in and explains that his "life flashed before his eyes" when he turned the failsafe key, and that the non-linear flashes have not stopped since then. He confesses that he was actually trying to save Charlie with the lightning rod and Claire's would-be drowning, having seen that Charlie himself was originally killed after intervening in those incidents, but sadly admits that certain things cannot be changed and that Charlie is surely intended for death.
