BIONIC WOMAN {2007 SERIES} {PILOT} (TV)
Summary
The pilot of this remake of the 1976 television series of the same name, about a woman with cybernetic enhancements working for a secret government organization. At 4:28 AM at a Wolf Creek biotech research facility, a team of soldiers confront a woman in a hospital gown who has apparently brutally murdered some of the facility’s staff. She is shot to death by the squad’s leader. Three years later, in San Francisco, a young bartender named Jaime Sommers lives with her younger sister Becca, with whom she frequently argues; their parents left her in Jaime’s care and both are quite resentful of their situation. Later Jaime attends a lecture given by her boyfriend Will Anthros, a bioethics professor and surgeon. That night, Jaime goes out on a date with Will, leaving Becca in the care of two of her friends. Will talks about an important grant he is awaiting which will allow him the opportunity to work on a research project in Paris. Jaime reveals that she is pregnant with his child, much to his shock. She feels as though this will ruin his life, but he says he loves her and wants to marry her. On the way back from their date they get into a horrible car accident leaving them both severely injured; the woman responsible for the deaths at Wolf Creek is apparently also behind this accident. EMTs arrive to pick up Will and Jaime; her injuries are far more extensive than his and she has to be sedated. They are brought to Wolf Creek and Will leads a medical team, preparing to operate on Jaime. He amputates Jaime’s arm and her legs as his mysterious employer looks on, choosing to allow Will to go through with the procedure, which is unofficial and could be terminated at any moment. Meanwhile, the woman responsible for the accident reports back to another mysterious figure who appears to be her lover. Jaime eventually wakes up from surgery with Will at her side. She is distraught to learn that her unborn baby was lost, and Will explains that her legs, right arm, right ear and right eye have all been replaced with nanotechnological machinery which essentially heal all of her tissue damage. She is horrified when she sees her legs, which now have a partially mechanical appearance. In a panic she pushes Will and finds that she has superhuman strength, as she is able to send him careening into a plate glass window. The medical staff sedates her and she reawakens later on, discovering that her limbs have regained their normal appearance. Will returns and explains that he had to perform the operation in order to save her life. Will is part of a council to decide what to do with Jaime, and he has a disagreement with Jae Kim, the squad leader who shot the mysterious woman three years ago. Kim believes that Jaime’s superhuman abilities make her too dangerous to keep around. Jaime becomes disagreeable towards the staff as the second-in-command of the facility, Ruth, sits down to talk with her. Ruth tells her that Becca is safe and that they have devised a cover story to account for her disappearance. Ruth also indicates that they have a “contingency plan” to send Jaime home, but that they may not do so. Will’s superior tells him that he wants Jaime to be trained for combat, although Will does not. Ruth shows Kim a picture Jaime drew of the mysterious woman, leading them both to question whether she is actually dead. Will helps Jaime break out of her room and tries to lead her aboveground to safety. She evades a helicopter by using her new bionic legs to run through a forest at superhuman speeds. Will tries to convince his superior to allow Jaime to go free for the time being so that he can “help her realize what’s at stake.” Ruth convinces him to agree with Will. He orders Kim to investigate the circumstances of the accident which brought Jaime there in the first place. Jaime returns home to her apartment just as Will tries to call her. She finds that she can leap from rooftop to rooftop with the aid of her new enhancements. She reunites with Becca, who is angry at her for seemingly abandoning her on a whim and lying about her whereabouts. Jaime says she can’t tell her where she really was and Becca becomes more upset. The mysterious woman tries to meet with her lover again, but finds that he is gone, leaving only a message scrawled on the wall reading “you failed me.” The man blackmails a guard from a secret super-max prison in Florence, California for some sinister purpose. At the prison in question, Kim interrogates Will’s father, a prisoner there, about the mysterious woman, whom he identifies as Sarah Corvus. He wants to know how she could still be alive after he killed her, but he gives Kim no useful information. Back at her bartending job, Jaime meets a customer who seems familiar to her, not realizing that it is Sarah. While speaking to her, Jaime’s bionic eye and ear come online, giving her highly enhanced computerized data on her surroundings. She flees into the bathroom and vomits, and Sarah comes in after her, offering to help her. She seems intimately familiar with the details of Jaime’s bionics, but disappears before she can elaborate. Outside, a mugger tries to attack Jaime with a knife but she easily disarms him and pins him to the ground before running off. She goes to see Will and is secretly followed by Kim. Will explains that he implanted microscopic electronic chips, a military technology developed by his father, in her brain, reconfiguring her brain for warfare in the process. He explains that she will require training to establish full control over her enhancements, and that he only wants to protect her. She ends up sleeping with him and later she asks about Sarah Corvus. Before he can answer a sniper bullet hits Will in the shoulder, sending him to the ground. Jaime zooms in with her bionic eye and finds that Sarah is the shooter. Jaime pulls Will to safety and leaves just before Kim bursts into the room. Sarah sees him and chooses not to shoot him. Jaime climbs up to the roof and confronts Sarah, who explains that she has been given similar technological enhancements as Jaime, albeit far more extensive. They fight and at first Sarah easily overpowers Jaime, but Jaime fights back and manages to injure Sarah. A helicopter arrives and Sarah takes her opportunity to escape. Will is taken away to the hospital to treat his gunshot wound. Will’s boss confronts Jaime and says that she has to choose whether to work for him or not, although the alternative could mean her death. She agrees to his proposal, but only on her own terms, noting that her superhuman abilities ensure that she cannot be forced to comply with his requests. Jaime returns home to find Becca asleep. Meanwhile, in Sonora Pass, California, Will’s father hikes through the snowy wilderness, having apparently escaped from prison along with Sarah’s lover. Commercials deleted.
