LOST: STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters’ past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Sawyer, Kate and Karl make their escape from the Hydra island in a canoe, though Kate declares that they must go back for Jack despite his wishes. When Tom approaches Jack, Jack is sure that he is to be killed, pointing out that the Others have committed many ruthless acts already. In the past, Jack spends time on a beach in Phuket and goes kite-flying with a mysterious woman, Achara. Jack is moved into another cage and learns that Juliet is in trouble with "the sheriff," though he ignores Tom's questions about Sawyer and Kate's hasty departure. As they near the main island, Sawyer points out that they must make camp for the night before seeking out the other 815 survivors, and Karl says vaguely that he and the Others live on the main island and only journey to the Hydra island to work on "projects." When asked about the kidnapped children, he states that they have "a better life" now and reminisces about his happy times with Alex.

Juliet tells Jack that Ben is suffering a dangerous post-op infection and asks Jack to save him as a "personal favor" to her, explaining that she killed someone and is in trouble, but he refuses to help. In Thailand, Achara observes that Jack is there to "find himself" and, when he notices her receiving a large amount of money from a man, says simply that she has "a gift." The sheriff introduces herself as Isabel and examines Jack's Chinese-character tattoos, noting that the message is "a bit ironic." She then questions him about Juliet's request for him to kill Ben during the surgery and seems to know that he is lying when he denies it. Jack and Achara's relationship continues, though she refuses to divulge any details about her life or work. On the Hydra island, Jack is stunned to spot Cindy, the flight attendant from 815, in a crowd with a number of Others, including young Emma, angered when she says that they are there "to watch." Sawyer finds Karl in tears in the forest and orders him "cowboy up," saying that he should go and find Alex if he does indeed truly love her. Alex informs Jack that Juliet's "verdict" is soon to be delivered, noting that Juliet committed murder to save Sawyer and Kate. Jack gets an idea and, confirming that Ben is still in charge, asks Alex's help in escaping his cage.

Jack bursts into Ben's operating room and bluntly informs him that he needs serious medical treatment for the infection. He offers to treat Ben if he puts a stop to Juliet's execution, though Ben points out that she is "one of them" and does not truly care for Jack. In Phuket, Jack tails Achara to a tattoo parlor, though she informs him that her true job is to "see who people are," declaring that he is both a leader and an outsider. He demands a tattoo reflecting his identity, ignoring her protests that there will be "consequences" from her people. Jack hurries to Juliet's hearing and gives Isabel a note from Ben commuting her sentence, though it also states that she must be marked. After receiving the tattoo, Jack is beaten by several men and ordered to leave Thailand, and Juliet brings Jack a sandwich and shows him her star-shaped brand, which he advises her to treat with aloe. They decide to work together to ensure that Ben keeps his word and allows them to leave, and as Jack prepares to head back to the main island with Ben, Isabel offers her interpretation of his tattoos, though Jack counters that they do not mean precisely what they say. Sawyer admits that he let Karl go, arguing that he was a "target" to Ben, and suggests to an angry Kate that she feels guilty for their romantic night together, saying that she only slept with him out of the belief that he was soon to be killed. Includes commercials and promos.
