WONDERFUL WORLD OF WILBUR POPE, THE {UNAIRED PILOT FOR MISTER ED} (TV)

Summary

The unaired pilot for this comedy about a talking horse. The plot begins as Wilbur and Carlotta Pope enter their new home after completion of its sale. Looking around the backyard, they enter the barn and find an abandoned horse. Carlotta insists on selling him, but Wilbur bonds with the animal after feeding and washing him.

When Carlotta finds a buyer, the horse affects a limp to ruin the deal. Sure enough, it falls through, with the horse then winking at a startled Wilbur. When Wilbur continues his arguments, Carlotta relents and says they can keep the horse. Once alone with Wilbur, the horse begins to talk, stating that his name is Ed. A shocked Wilbur tells Carlotta, then some neighbors, about what he has heard. However, they all think he's crazy.

When Wilbur drags Carlotta out to the barn, Ed refuses to speak. Carlotta then tries to make amends with the neighbors. When rebuffed, she tells Wilbur that they have to move. Wilbur's attempts to tape record Ed's voice quickly fall flat. However, Ed hatches a scheme by which Wilbur can convince Carlotta and the neighbors that it was all a misunderstanding. The plan works, with Ed taking satisfaction in securing his place in the barn, and finally getting a good night's sleep. Commercials deleted.
