DAMAGES: JESUS, MARY, AND JOE COCKER (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic suspense series about the relationships and battles between several high-powered and ruthless New York lawyers. In this episode, Ellen celebrates her birthday with her friends, including an anxious Katie, who gifts her with a pair of Statue of Liberty bookends – which are used six months later to murder David. Tom, still pretending to have been fired by Patty, agrees to remain "on call," and Holly Frobisher begins to lose patience with the ongoing litigation and urges Arthur to give his former employees whatever they ask for in order to conclude the ugly business. Patty convinces the plaintiffs to give her an extra week before accepting the settlement, sure that Katie's testimony will prove to be the "smoking gun," and when Arthur questions Fiske about the potential outcome of a divorce, the lawyer assures him that his case is airtight – except for Katie's potentially damning evidence. Ellen speaks up in an associates' meeting and advises Patty to play on the plaintiffs' emotions to convince them to go to trial, though colleague Andrew Vida advises her not to alienate her co-workers now that Tom is supposedly gone.

Patty meets face-to-face with Katie and immediately accuses her of lying about the timeline of the Florida events, and Katie complains to Ellen that her boss is "crazy." The mysterious bearded man watches Katie and then reports back to Arthur, coldly offering a "permanent" solution to the problem, but Arthur refuses. Patty finds that Katie is indeed obfuscating details about the Florida weekend and tasks Tom with uncovering the truth, though Katie begins to reconsider her involvement in the case. Arthur spends a coke-addled evening with a sex worker and rashly tells the bearded man to "do it," while elsewhere Tom meets with a shady associate of Patty's and instructs him to "look into" both Ellen and David. When confronted, Patty freely admits to manipulating Ellen with regards to Katie's testimony, and Ellen meets with her former boss Hollis Nye, who again warns her that Patty will "change" her and advises her to learn all she can from her formidable mentor and then flee her employ as soon as possible. Patty finds that son Michael has been making unsavory charges to his credit card, and Tom pretends to clean out his office and bids Ellen farewell.

Katie, aware that she is being followed, finally cracks and signs Fiske's NDA, and a panicked Arthur calls off the hit and meets with her for the first time at her restaurant, musing that their "fates are intertwined" after Florida. Startled by his polite demeanor, Katie returns to Patty and admits that she had a one-night stand with a stranger named Greg on the night before Frobisher's big party, leading to an unwanted pregnancy. She states that she has not seen Greg since and knows of no connection to Frobisher, and Patty warns her that her personal life will be scrutinized once she openly testifies against the famous CEO. Patty tells Ellen that Katie was hiding nothing after all, though notes that she signed away access to her medical records in Fiske's NDA. Patty then surprises Ellen with keys to a fancy Upper West Side apartment, warmly offering to help her with "anything" she might need. Tom watches as Ellen secretly meets up with Greg, and Arthur tries to enjoy normal family time with his children as Patty surprises Katie with a new puppy, promising "no more secrets" between them. Ellen and David move into their swanky new home – and six months later, Ellen is shown apparently striking David dead with the bookend. Commercials deleted.
