PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MEDIA AS ENTERTAINMENT: SCRUBS: THE FAREWELL TOUR {NEW YORK} {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars conducted by The Paley Center for Media which celebrate media as entertainment. Held at the Paley Center in New York, and moderated by Michael Ausiello (senior writer for TV Guide magazine), this seminar celebrates "Scrubs," the comedy series about hospital intern J.D. Dorian, his peers, and the doctors and nurses with whom they work. Pat Mitchell (president and CEO, The Paley Center) applauds the seminar's co-sponsor, The New York Comedy Festival, then tells how "Scrubs" is completing its seventh season, which is scheduled to be its last. Mitchell brings Jodi Applegate (co-anchor of the Fox network's "Good Day New York") to the stage, who tells about the show airing in syndication on Fox. Applegate then introduces Ausiello, who shows a clip from an episode of the show on which he guest- starred. Ausiello then introduces executive producer/director/creator/writer Bill Lawrence.

Lawrence talks about the ongoing writers' strike and explains why a new episode can't be screened for the seminar. He introduces an episode from the show's fifth season, "My Way Home," which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see B:91843.)

Following the screening, Ausiello introduces the panelists: Lawrence; and cast members Neil Flynn (The Janitor); Christa Miller (Jordan Sullivan); Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa); Donald Faison (Christopher Turk); Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid); and Zach Braff (John "J.D." Dorian).

Panelists touch on such topics as: how the writers' strike will affect the remainder of the season; the cast members' emotional state as the series winds down; the off-set friendships among the cast; the trick to writing scripts that blend comedy with drama; how the relationship between J.D. and Turk evolved over the years; the "instant chemistry" experienced between Braff and Faison; if J.D. and Elliot should end up together; why the character of the janitor won't be given a name until the final episode; if it's awkward for Miller to work for her husband, Lawrence; memorable episodes from the show's run; and why Tara Reid was the cast's least favorite guest star.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: if censors have challenged the show's more daring concepts; Chalke's secret for crying instantly when required; if the cast is resentful that the show only won technical Emmy awards; who picks the songs that are heard in the show; why John C. McGinley (Perry Cox) and Ken Jenkins (Bob Kelso) didn't appear on the panel; if a spin-off is in the works; how much of the dream sequences are fueled by the fantasies of cast and crew members; what will happen to the abandoned hospital where the show is filmed; and what Lawrence hopes will be the show's legacy.
