PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA PUBLIC PROGRAMS SERIES, THE: SIT, UBU, SIT: AN EVENING WITH GARY DAVID GOLDBERG AND FRIENDS IN NEW YORK {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media. Held at The Paley Center for Media in New York, this evening honors Gary David Goldberg, creator of such hit shows as “Spin City” and “Family Ties,” and the actors who worked for him. Pat Mitchell (President, C.E.O. of The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before inviting Goldberg up to speak. Goldberg offers his own remarks and then setting up clips of his work. Clips shown include: selections from “Family Ties” (1982-1989); “Brooklyn Bridge” (1991-1993); and “Spin City” (1996-2002). Mitchell then introduces the panelists: Goldberg; and actors Richard Kind (Paul Lassiter); Michael Boatman (Carter Heywood); Marion Ross (Sophie Berger); Michael Gross (Steven Keaton); Meredith Baxter (Elyse Keaton); and Michael J. Fox (Alex P. Keaton). Topics of discussion include: Fox’s memories of working with Goldberg; Gross reminiscing about the sense of family that Goldberg engendered among his cast and crew; Boatman talking about the “screwy” working environment on “Spin City;” Kind remarking on Goldberg’s predilection for basketball and how it reflects his attitude towards television production; Goldberg’s less-than-pleasant recollections of the “Family Ties” movie; how Ross got her part on “Brooklyn Bridge;” Baxter’s memories of the last episode of “Family Ties;” the challenge of making “Spin City” and Fox’s ambitions for the show; the panelists’ thoughts on what they feel is the downfall of television; and Boatman’s odd encounter with an African woman. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: Goldberg’s memories of pitching “Brooklyn Bridge” to CBS; whether he would ever consider doing another sitcom; how Goldberg’s wife Diane Meehan partially inspired the creation of Jenny Lewis’s (Katie Monahan) character on “Brooklyn Bridge;” the character dynamic between parent and child on “Family Ties;” Gross and Boatman comparing their hairstyles on their respective shows; how Fox’s character on “Family Ties” became an unlikely role model; the development of “Brooklyn Bridge’s” theme song; and the actors’ current projects.
