PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA PUBLIC PROGRAMS SERIES, THE: SIT, UBU, SIT: AN EVENING WITH GARY DAVID GOLDBERG AND FRIENDS IN LOS ANGELES {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media. Held at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles, this evening honors Gary David Goldberg, creator of such hit shows as “Spin City” and “Family Ties,” and the actors who worked for him. Barbara Dixon (Director, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing the evenings’ moderator, Cynthia Littleton (Deputy Editor for News Development, Daily Variety), who offers her own remarks before introducing Goldberg. Goldberg then showcases a series of clips from his various shows. Clips shown include: selections from “Family Ties” (1982-1989); “Brooklyn Bridge” (1991-1993); and “Spin City” (1996-2002). Littleton then introduces the panelists: Goldberg; and actors Barry Bostwick (Mayor Randall M. Winston Jr.); Alan Ruck (Stuart Bondek); Scott Valentine (Nick Moore); Tina Yothers (Jennifer Keaton); Justine Bateman (Mallory Keaton); Michael Gross (Steven Keaton); Meredith Baxter (Elyse Keaton); and Marion Ross (Sophie Berger). Topics of discussion include: Goldberg’s motivation for writing his recent memoir and his youth as a “drifter;” Bateman’s sense of freedom on “Family Ties;” the level of support that the actors felt while working for Goldberg; the process of script revision on “Family Ties;” the “confusing” nature of Valentine’s introductory scene in “Family Ties” and his feelings about working with Goldberg; Ross recounting how “easy” it was to slip into her role on “Brooklyn Bridge;” Goldberg’s affinity for sports; how Goldberg began writing; the sense of cooperation between Goldberg and his actors and writers; how Bateman influenced the development of her character; how Goldberg and Bill Lawrence came up with the idea for “Spin City;” Goldberg dealing with success and having multiple shows on air simultaneously; and memories of making “Brooklyn Bridge.” Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the reasons why “Brooklyn Bridge” was cancelled; Goldberg’s lengthy college process; how Charlie Sheen came to replace Michael J. Fox on “Spin City;” and Goldberg discussing his dog Ubu for whom his production company was named.
