Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media. Held at The Paley Center for Media in New York, this evening celebrates the history and achievements of local public radio station WNYC. Pat Mitchell (president, C.E.O. of The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing Laura Walker (president, WNYC). Walker introduces the panelists: Brooke Gladstone (host, “On the Media”) and Kurt Andersen (host, “On the Media”), who present an overview of the history of media and the tenacity of so-called “dead” media forms before introducing the evenings’ moderator, Brian Lehrer (host, “The Brian Lehrer Show”). Lehrer offers his own comments about WNYC’s upcoming projects before introducing panelists John Hockenberry (host, “The Takeaway”) and Adaora Udoji (host, “The Takeaway”). Topics of discussion include: Udoji’s educational and journalistic background; whether radio is a “step down” from television; Hockenberry on the relationship between radio and its audience; WNYC’s new online features; how WNYC hopes to foster interactivity between itself and its listeners; and Gladstone on the nature of objective and subjective reporting. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: how WNYC edits its content; the lack of international news coverage in American media; the potential fate of newspapers in the digital age; Hockenberry’s approach to constructing a radio program; the dangers of disinformation inherent in new media; Hockenberry on his interactions with a fifth-grade class utilized as a political focus group; how or if WNYC would embrace becoming a multi-media broadcasting platform; and how WNYC hopes to attract younger listeners.
