PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MEDIA AS ENTERTAINMENT: THE NEXT GENERATION: KYLE XY {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Media as Entertainment events. Held at The Paley Center in Los Angeles, this evening honors "Kyle XY," a drama series centering on Kyle, an extraordinarily gifted young man with no memory of his past. Rebecca Faez, director of administration of The Paley Center in Los Angeles, offers opening comments before introducing moderator John Griffiths, TV critic for Us Weekly. After telling about the show's history, Griffiths brings executive producer Eric Tuchman to the stage. Tuchman introduces a ten-minute montage of scenes from the first two seasons of "Kyle XY," interspersed with cast members' comments about the show.
Clips include: Kyle facing the Tragers and telling them that he'll answer all their questions about him; Kyle learning to levitate over the lawn sprinklers in the back yard; Kyle seeking out Lori for advice on whether to ask Amanda to the prom; the Tragers debating why Kyle suddenly wants privacy; Kyle counseling Jessi about her relationship with her father; Kyle taking away Jessi's pain by causing a power surge in the lab; Declan being bested at basketball by Kyle; Kyle romancing Amanda as they share a kiss; Josh realizing that Kyle is no longer "unplugged"; and scientists deciding to "introduce" themselves to Kyle after witnessing his abilities.
After the screening, Griffiths introduces the panelists: supervising producer Julie Plec; executive producers Tuchman and David Himelfarb; and cast members Jaimie Alexander (Jessi XX); Chris Olivero (Declan McDonough); Bruce Thomas (Stephen Trager); Marguerite MacIntyre (Nicole Trager); April Matson (Lori Trager); and Matt Dallas (Kyle).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the mysteries of Kyle's origins; how the series serves as a show for families to watch together; if the storyline was always in place or evolved as the series progressed; how films like "Edward Scissorhands" and "Starman" influenced the show's nature; similarities between Dallas and the character of Kyle; fans who relate to Kyle being an outsider; controversial storylines such as drug-using parents, promiscuity, and sexual arousal; conflicting guidelines from officials at ABC Family, where the show initially airs, and the ABC network, where episodes are later repeated; whether the character of libidinous teen Lori is a role model since she suffers "consequences"; on-set pranks pulled by cast members; the challenge of blending sci-fi themes with family drama; how a weekly moral quandary makes the show "tick"; if cast members are allowed input on scripts; season three plot developments; and cast members' experiences with the show's most zealous devotees.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the process of casting Kyle; how the show compares to youth-oriented series like "The O.C." or "One Tree Hill"; the manner in which the actors deal with so many emotionally wrenching scenes; camaraderie among cast members; why the show appeals to such a wide demographic; changes that were made to the show after the original pilot was shot; why subjects such as a teen with cancer were introduced; and aspects of the storyline that have left audiences unsatisfied.
