TRAVELER: THE EXCHANGE {FINAL AIRED EPISODE} (TV)

Summary

The final episode in this short-lived dramatic suspense series about two Yale students framed – seemingly by their best friend -- for a terrorist bombing. In this episode, almost six days after the bombing, Marlow catches Jay and finds herself in a stand-off with Tyler, who holds a gun on an NYPD cop. She tries to assure them that she believes their claims, but Will arrives and convinces his so-called friends to flee with him. Learning of their escape, Chambers angrily throws Marlow off the case, ignoring her protests that Virgil has evidence proving that Will was ordered to carry out the bombing. Jay and Tyler demand answers from Will, who mends his own gunshot wound from Marlow as he hints only that he is "some kind of spy" and intends to help them get their lives back. Elsewhere, Marlow reads through her files and tries to connect the dots, recalling Jay's claims that "Joseph" instructed Will to bomb the museum. Will explains that Freed, the former deputy head of the FBI, had been spying on Americans through "Operation Hometown" and set Jay and Tyler up as "patsies" for the bombing, using their fathers' deaths as their apparent motive. Will adds that he had orders to kill them both, though refused to do so, and that something Freed desires is currently in Tyler's car, which has been seized by the FBI.

Freed prepares to "clean up the mess" as Chambers finally arrests Amy for refusing to talk, and Marlow enlists Harold to conduct an NSA search for the mysterious "Joseph," though Borjes seems to doubt her plan. Jay sneaks into Tyler's car at the impound lot and finds the Trumbull painting in the trunk, though he barely escapes from the flatbed truck on which the car is being transported, and Chambers soon learns of the trio's actions from the driver. Will admits that he does not understand the painting's significance but intends to use it as a "chip" to lure Freed to them, and Jay and Tyler realize that he is seeking revenge for Maya's death. They point out that they must keep Freed alive to clear their own names, and they resolve to expose him and "make him suffer." Borjes spots Will in the background of a recent photo of Freed and Carlton, and Marlow tracks down Joseph Lindon, who confirms that he works for the Fallbrook Dunn crisis management firm. He receives a phone call and immediately attempts to kill her, but she shoots him and he dies before giving up a name. Will calls Freed and demands an exchange, though Freed states that he wants more than just the painting, and they agree to meet in Washington Square Park in one hour's time. Borjes arrests Carlton, sure that he secretly met with his son on the previous day, but Otis Whaley shoots Carlton outside the club. Borjes chases him down, but Chambers suddenly shoots Borjes and sadly states that he was "too good" at his job, revealing that he has been in on the conspiracy all along.

Will, Jay and Tyler corner Freed prior to the meet, having correctly guessed that he planned to ambush them, but Will turns on his friends, having agreed to hand them over in exchange for his own freedom. Freed smugly reveals that the bombing was "just the beginning" – but Jay records his confession, revealing Will's "betrayal" to be a ruse. Freed declares that the police will never believe their claims and hints that Will has been working for the Fourth Branch, the organization behind Jay's father's death, all along. He promises to reveal the rest if they allow him to go free, while elsewhere a grieving Marlow is stunned to discover that Chambers was the one to call Joseph right before his attempt on her life. Jay, Tyler and Will contact a newspaper and leave the limo containing Freed and the evidence against him outside of the press office, though Will points out that he will still have to hide until his name is definitively cleared. Jay and Tyler promise to defend their friend – but the limo suddenly explodes, taking Freed and all of the proof clearing their names with it. Includes commercials.
