PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA PUBLIC PROGRAMS SERIES, THE: LUCIE & LUCY: LUCIE ARNAZ SHARES TREASURES FROM THE FAMILY VIDEO COLLECTION {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s One on One series. Held at The Paley Center for Media in New York, this evening celebrates Lucille Ball, as her daughter Lucie Arnaz talks about her experiences on television and in theatre, accompanied by various clips from the family video collection. Ron Simon (curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing the evenings’ moderator, Robert Osborne (host, Turner Classic Movies). Osborne recounts his interactions with Ball before introducing Arnaz. Topics of discussion include: how Arnaz felt about being the “unknown entity” her family; her grandmother , Desiree “DeeDee” Evelyn Hunt, and her influence on her life; how Arnaz overcame her shyness and discovered her enthusiasm for stage performance; Arnaz recounting how her mother utilized her burgeoning talent; Arnaz on co-starring with her mother on “Here’s Lucy” and Ball’s perfectionism; Arnaz’s favorite guest stars on “Here’s Lucy;” the many musical numbers on the show; her relationship with Ball’s co-star Vivian Vance; Arnaz’s experiences in theater; Arnaz’s family and their musical talents; how she uncovered the vast storehouse of family videos; how Ball would have felt about her far-reaching impact; and Ball’s many co-stars and how they influenced Arnaz. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: Arnaz’s current and future projects; Arnaz on her mother’s feelings about the “business” end of show business; Arnaz on why Ball’s shows remain “timeless;” Arnaz on a musical project about her family; the “I Love Lucy” writers and their importance to the show; Arnaz on her oddly-spelt name; the costumes on “I Love Lucy;” Ball and Desi Arnaz’s post-divorce relationship; the relationship between Vance and William Frawley; Ball’s trepidations about her career after “I Love Lucy;” and Arnaz on her decision to leave California for New York. Clips are interspersed throughout, including: a selection of Osborne on an episode of “The Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” (1959); selections from “Here’s Lucy” (1968-1974); Ball and Arnaz’s appearances on “Dinah!” (1975, 1976); Ball and Arnaz on “Today” (1979); Arnaz and Ball on “The Mike Douglas Show” sharing some old home movies (1978); Ball and Arnaz on “The Merv Griffith Show” (1973); excerpts from the “Lucille Ball Specials” “Happy Anniversary and Goodbye,” “What Now, Catherine Curtis,” and “Lucy Calls the President” (1974, 1976, 1977); Arnaz and her father doing a vaudeville routine on “The Kraft Music Hall” (1970); and Arnaz singing on “The Mike Douglas Show” (1978).
