MIDDAY LIVE WITH BILL BOGGS {SEGMENT} {LUCIE ARNAZ, DESI ARNAZ, JR.} (TV}
Summary
A segment of one in this series of talk shows hosted by Bill Boggs. Guests include actress Lucie Arnaz, actor Desi Arnaz Jr., director of marketing for the New York Daily News Jonathan Thompson, New York Post assistant publisher Martin Fishbein, The Village Voice president and publisher William J. Ryan, The News World promotion director Larry Moffitt, Christian Science Monitor marketing manager Steve Cogswell, City News publisher Chris Haggedorn, Daily News chief investigative reporter Bill Federici, screenwriter Vicki Polon, director Claudia Weill, and actress Melanie Mayron.
Boggs interviews Thompson and Fishbein about an ongoing newspaper strike in the New York area. They discuss how the strike has affected newspaper readership and how it is likely to do so in the future, and differences in the makeup of personnel between competing newspapers. Ryan, Moffatt, and Cogswell join the discussion to discuss their tactics to promote their papers and increase circulation, changes in how newspapers are delivered and issues involving the newspaper unions. Haggedorn and Federici talk about the unique nature of the City News (comprised of staff from striking newspapers and set to be published during the strike), how its existence is approved by both the major newspapers and the unions, and the unique employment and payment solutions devised by some newspapers.
The guests take questions from the audience at various points in the discussion, including how the newspaper strike has affected New Jersey residents, an example of the basic conflict behind the strike, whether or not the strike will affect the price of newspapers, and how distribution is affected by union interactions.
Boggs then interviews Arnaz and Arnaz Jr. about their childhood and issues between siblings in general. They discuss recollections of their uncle (identified only as “Ned”), physical and verbal altercations that they got in when they were children and advice that their mother gave them about the matter, how each of them interacted with each other’s’ childhood friends, their recollections of living next door to Jack Benny,
Arnaz and Arnaz Jr. receive questions from the audience, which is comprised entirely of sibling pairs. They ask questions about how to deal with issues about interacting with siblings, such as organizing tasks about the household, what to do if a sibling starts inadvertently stealing the other one’s friends, dealing with a sibling’s reputation in a school situation, perceived inequalities in the treatment of siblings by their parents, issues stemming from twin siblings, how to deal with a younger sibling trying to constantly accompany an older one, dealing with siblings perpetrating “garbage stunts,”
Boggs also hosts a discussion of the upcoming film “Girlfriends” with Polon, Weill, and Mayron. They talk about the film’s plot, the relationship problems at the core of its story, and the long production process and highly localized advertising campaign for the film. Includes commercials.
