PUSHING DAISIES: THE NORWEGIANS (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy-based dramedy series about a pie-maker whose touch can revive the dead. In this episode, in a flashback, young Ned and his headgear-wearing school friend Eugene Mulchandani stumble across a dead body when they are playing in the woods. They are wrongly suspected of involvement in the man’s death, and when they are both locked up, Ned’s father does not come to free him. In the present, Chuck’s father Charles drives off in Ned’s car, and Chuck is heartbroken at being "Dad-dumped." Emerson says they are all to blame, including himself, as he helped Chuck hide Dwight Dixon’s body. When Olive inquires about their hushed conversation and Emerson sends her away, Chuck voices her guilt at always keeping Olive in the dark until they need her help. Vivian soon comes to Emerson and asks for his help in finding Dwight. Knowing full well that Dwight is dead and buried in Charles’ grave, Emerson tells Vivian that he has clearly moved on to someone new and is not worth searching for. Undeterred, Vivian then hires the Norwegians, a crack trio of Scandinavian private investigators who are Emerson’s rivals. They interrogate Emerson, believing he has knowledge about the case, and say they will uncover the truth with the help of “Mother,” their high-tech mobile forensic lab. Worried, Emerson and the others enlist Olive’s help to convince Vivian to call off the Norwegians. When she goes to the sisters’ home and talks with Vivian, Lily quickly agrees with Olive, as she was involved in Dwight’s disappearance as well. Vivian refuses to be a "pushover" and reiterates her determination to find Dwight, and Olive, sympathizing with the feeling of being ignored, changes her mind and sides with Vivian, encouraging her to continue her search.

When the Norwegians find the note that Lily left in Dwight’s hotel room, Vivian is shocked to realize her sister was involved. Vivian confronts Lily, who tells her that Dwight dug up Chuck and stole Charles’ watch from her grave, and though horrified, Vivian refuses to believe Lily’s claims of innocence. While spying on the Norwegians, Emerson is stunned to find that Olive is now in cahoots with them. They tell Olive that they suspect foul play in Dwight’s disappearance and intend to dig up Charles’ and Chuck’s graves to look for evidence. Chuck and Ned are dismayed at Olive's betrayal, and are even more surprised when both graves are found to be empty. They conclude that Charles must have moved Dwight’s body to protect Chuck and Ned, but DNA evidence will surely point to Emerson. Emerson blames himself for the fiasco, but Ned has a plan: Emerson calls the Norwegians to his office and distracts them as Ned attempts to steal “Mother” and destroy the evidence. Olive catches him and reveals herself to be a double agent, still on Ned's side. As they hurriedly drive away, he admits that Charles is alive and that he, Ned, was involved in Dwight’s disappearance, but they hit a dead end and nearly careen off a cliff. Hanging to a branch for dear life, Ned admits he might have had feelings for Olive at one time, which delights her. Suddenly, they are pulled to safety by a mysterious man. Back at the apartment, Chuck speculates that her father rescued them and is keeping a watchful eye on them from afar. Elsewhere, Emerson talks with Vivian again and gently tells her that Dwight stole Chuck’s body, which breaks her heart.

The Norwegians confront Olive at the Pie Hole and accuse her of “killing Mother,” but she pins the blame on a rogue band of Swedes. Just then, activity on Dwight’s credit card reveals him to be at a nearby motel, but when they all travel there, they find him dead. Emerson and Ned are nervous, but the Norwegians’ careful investigation turns up nothing suspicious; the scene was carefully laid out to make Dwight’s death look natural. The Norwegians depart, and Ned and Emerson are relieved. Lily and Vivian make up, and Chuck finds Ned baking with fresh fruit, rather than alive-agained fruit, and he states that he is done waking the dead for good, as it brings too much trouble. However, it is then revealed that their “guardian angel” was not, in fact, Chuck’s father…but Ned’s. Includes commercials.
