WILLIAM B. WILLIAMS ON WNEW-AM: MARTIN LUTHER
KING TRIBUTE (RADIO)
Summary
Hosted by William B. Williams, this broadcast pays tribute to slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the first anniversary of his assassination. Williams salutes King by playing recordings of segments of famous King speeches from 1963 to 1968, and offers recorded excerpts from his own coverage of the funeral procession in Atlanta, Georgia one year earlier. In one such segment, taped en route to the service, funeral cortege member Nipsey Russell explains to Williams why King's funeral is taking place at Morehouse College. Includes brief segments of King's famous 1963 "I have a dream..." speech from the March on Washington, and his acceptance speech upon being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway in 1964. News anchor Bruce Charles reports on President Richard Nixon and his staff as they prepare to examine the Great Society programs of the Johnson administration, while correspondent Walter Rogers provides a story on Dr. Ralph Abernathy's involvement in the Poor People's Campaign. Musical selections include "Galveston" by Glen Campbell and "Hello, Dolly" by Frank Sinatra. Includes commercials and public service announcements.
