CHRISTINE SWEET READS FOR THE HOLIDAYS: THE BEDQUILT {NEW YEAR'S} (RADIO)
Summary
One in this series of holiday readings by Christine Sweet. In this program, Sweet reads "The Bedquilt" (1906) by Dorothy Canfield Fisher (1879-1958), the tale of New England spinster who realizes her potential late in life. Set in a small Vermont village at the turn of the century, this story tells of a shy, elderly spinster who earns her keep with her brother's family by attending to their most tedious, uninspiring household chores. The family barely notices her existence, until one day she is inspired to begin work on a beautiful needlework quilt in her spare time. Soon, not only does the family begin to appreciate the great skill and artistry of her work, but she finally comes to hold a place of dignity and respect within the household. Indeed, after a lifetime of joyless discipline and self-effacement, the old woman begins to value herself. (This story is followed by an excerpt of Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring".)
