ROCKLINE: U2 (RADIO)

Summary

One in this syndicated radio series which features interviews, phone calls from listeners, and the recordings of some of the music world's most popular artists. This edition, hosted by Dave Herman, features the multi-platinum-selling Irish rock band U2. Herman provides some brief background information on U2, which he calls "arguably the most influential band of the 1990s." Herman opens the discussion by asking Bono and Edge about their use of professional one-word stage names, and the men say that they have used the same monikers since they were children as they believe that their names have a rock-and-roll flavor. Herman then asks the band members to discuss a gimmick they have been employing on their current tour. Every night, he explains, in between songs and from the middle of the stage, Bono places a phone call to the White House and asks to be put through to President George Bush. Bono states that, although the gag is meant to be taken lightly, he generally takes his politics very seriously. Herman then takes phone calls from listeners and plays selections from several of U2's hit albums. One listener asks the band members what music they listen to, and three of the musicians respond. Edge cites the industrial sounds of Ministry and Front 242; drummer Adam Clayton extols Hole and Shabba Ranks; and Bono chooses U2's opening act, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Other listeners then ask the band to comment on some of the following topics: the American stadiums in which they play, their feelings about scalpers, and the way in which they deal with obsessive fans. At the end of the program, Bono takes a call from Governor Bill Clinton, who is aboard the presidential candidate's campaign bus somewhere in the South. Bono grills Clinton about American foreign policy and what the musician sees as American "meddling in the world's affairs," and Clinton jokes with Bono about joining U2 as a touring saxophone player. Musical selections played include "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Angel of Harlem," "Where the Streets Have No Name," "Pride," "The Fly," "Even Better Than the Real Thing," "Bullet the Blue Sky," "I Will Follow," "New Year's Day," "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses," and an impromptu acoustic version of Elvis Presley's "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You."
