BOB DYLAN BASEMENT TAPES WITH MEG GRIFFIN, THE, PT. 1 OF 4 (RADIO)

Summary

Part one of four. This radio program features the music of Bob Dylan and the Band, who recorded five volumes of songs known as "the Basement Tapes" during the summer of 1967 in a house in West Saugerties, New York. Hosted by Meg Griffin, this program also features an interview with author Greil Marcus, who recently wrote the book, "Invisible Republic: Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes." Interspersed throughout the program are musical selections by Dylan and the Band, featuring guitarist Robbie Robertson, pianist Richard Manuel, bassist Rick Danko, and organist and saxophonist Garth Hudson. Topics discussed include: the way Dylan's musical style changed along with the social climate of the 1960s; the outrage in England over Dylan's sudden change from strictly acoustic folk music to electric guitar; the fact that people would attend a Dylan concert for the sole purpose of booing him off the stage; whether the pressures of the outside world literally forced Dylan and the members of the Band into seclusion; speculation about what Dylan thought the meaning of the tapes were; the musicians' original concept for the recording sessions; events in the music business and the world in 1967; and the reason Marcus feels that Dylan chose certain songs for particular reasons. Musical selections include the following: "All You Have to Do Is Dream," "I Can't Make It Alone," "Down on Me," "Bonnie Ship the Diamond," "One Man's Loss (Always Is Another Man's Gain)," "Baby Ain't That Fine," "Rock Salt and Nails," "(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I," "Be Careful of the Stones That You Throw," "Hills of Mexico," "I'm Alright," "One Single River," "Try Me," "One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)," "I Don't Hurt Anymore," "People Get Ready," "Baby, Won't You Be My Baby," "Don't You Try Me Now," "All You Have to Do Is Dream," "You Say You Love Me," "Young But Daily Growing," "Odds and Ends," "Get Your Rocks Off," "Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry, "Clothesline Saga," and "Apple Suckling Tree."
