Summary
One in this weekly series for Ukrainian listeners in the New York area. This installment pays tribute to Petro Kalneshevsky (1690-1803), the last military leader (hetman) of the Zaporozhian Cossack Host. He was sent into exile to a monastery when the Zaporozhian Host was disbanded by Catherine the Great and Ukraine was subsumed into Russia, listeners learn. He spent the final years of his life as a monk. The program focuses on folk songs and music related to the Zaporozhian Cossacks, who had their fortress near modern Zaporizhia, on the nether part of the Dnieper River.
Included among the works broadcast are a ballad by the nineteenth-century Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko, performed by the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus under the direction of Hrihory Kitasty; a folk song performed by the Church Choir of the Church of Saint Barbara in Vienna under the direction of Andrij Hnatyshyn; an excerpt from Hulak-Artemovsky's opera "The Zaporozhian Cossack beyond the Danube" ("Zaporozhets za Dunayem"), performed by the Bandura Ensemble of New York with Halyna Andreadis; nineteenth-century Cossack dances arranged for the piano and performed by Mikhaylo Stepanenko; folk songs played on the fiddle by Josef Davydenko and Teodor Svystun; a solo minstrel (kobzar) piece performed by Julian Kitasty; the "Bohdan Khmelnitsky March," performed by the Orchestra of Ukrainian Folk Instruments; a Ukrainian folk song performed on modern instruments and synthesizer by the Canadian-based Ukrainian folk-rock group "Flash of the Sabers" (Blysk Shabel); and other traditional songs performed on nontraditional instruments by the Ukrainian folk-rock group "Kobza" and others.
