RADIO JORDAN {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- CROATIAN} (RADIO)

Summary

One in this series of programs that mixes news and music for Croatians living in the New York area. Host Sime Simunovic opens by introducing the contributors to this edition, Bozidar Klaric, Vjekoslav Krsnik and Father Anton Bozanic. Next, the host plays two popular Dalmatian songs. The first major segment is a news report by Bozidar Klaric, reporting from the Croatian city of Zadar. Klaric focuses on two main issues under discussion in the Croatian parliament. The first involves the initiative by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman to amend the constitution. The ruling party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), supports the amendments, while the opposition parties, except for the Croatian Party of Law (HSP), oppose them, lobbying for broader changes. The second issue examined is the budget proposal, which is supported by the HDZ but opposed by other parties, with particular objections from Marko Veselica, leader of the Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HDKU). In other news, during the celebration of Saint Krsevan's Day in Zadar, a life-achievement award was given posthumously to Monsignor Marijan Oblak, the bishop of Zadar, and the City of Zadar Award was given to Dr. Milan Mladovic, a lawyer, and to several other local companies and institutions. Following a brief musical interlude, Vjekoslav Krsnik analyzes the political situation in Croatia. He focuses on Forum 21, a recently established informal association of journalists and reporters, whose aim is to fight for liberation of the media, currently under strict government control. The group is led by Damir Matkovic, a journalist, and also includes Mirko Galic, the recently appointed general manager of Croatian Radio Television (HRT). Krsnik voices doubts about the ability of Forum 21 to influence government policy, and he expresses strong disapproval of the ruling HDZ as he proceeds with his analysis of the political scene in the country. Another brief musical interlude is followed by the weekly spiritual-thoughts segment with Father Anton Bozanic. In commemoration of the feast day of Saint Nicholas, Father Bozanic reflects on the life of the saint, explaining how he came to be associated with gift giving and contemplating the meaning of Saint Nicholas to children and adults today. The weather forecast for Zagreb and other Croatian cities follows, plus brief musical interludes. The last offerings are a Christmas song by the Raguza group from Dubrovnik and a traditional Dalmatian song. Includes commercials.
