POPULAR AM {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- PORTUGUESE} (RADIO)
Summary
One in a series of Portuguese-language popular music and news radio programs broadcast from Newark, New Jersey. The program is composed of Portuguese music in a variety of styles, including ballads, samba, dance, jazz, funk, and rock and roll. It also provides segments of both local and Portuguese news reports and advertising. The majority of the commercials are in Portuguese, although there are a few in both Spanish and English. This edition opens with a flamenco-style ballad. Next, a love ballad is followed by the weather and a news brief from Portugal about the Portuguese president's announcement of his candidacy for a second term. The program then offers a rock-music section. More news from Portugal follows, detailing the government's plans to stimulate the sagging economy with a holiday festival in the Plaza de Almada. The program moves on to a section of local news with Agusto Amadore via telephone. Amadore reports that Sauro Mendez, a Portuguese personality in Newark, has passed away of a heart attack, and the journalist provides details about the upcoming funeral. He also informs listeners that Continental Airlines plans to create 1000 new jobs for Newark residents in areas such as customer service, baggage handling, and sales. This local segment is followed by a short musical portion, after which host Beta Maques opens the phone lines for a contest encouraging listeners to guess the weight of a Thanksgiving turkey at a local supermarket. Next, a traffic report from announcer Manny Gomez is interspersed with two short musical segments, a look ahead at the rest of the show, and advertisements. The program moves back to news from Portugal, discussing the awarding of a contract to build a subway station in the port of Lisbon; a bill passed by the Portuguese Parliament dealing with import/export regulations; and an investigation into the prime minister's expenditures for private planes on state-sponsored trips. A recap of weather and a preview of the next hour's programming precede a block of rock and samba music. After an advertising break, the program continues with more music. The second song in the segment is suddenly interrupted by an introduction by Maques of announcer Paolo Diaz Agoto, live from Portugal with the latest soccer news and scores. When he finishes, the program returns to the interrupted song and continues with a long musical segment, which includes songs by the Gypsy Kings. Announcer Raul Machado follows the music with more local news. The Prime Minister of Portugal has dedicated the new Portuguese consulate in Newark, he reports, and is visiting an art opening. This segment also includes details of the reconstruction of the St. James Hospital for the revitalization of downtown Newark, a story about education reform in Newark, and a return to the coverage of Continental Airlines and the death of Sauro Mendez. The segment ends with news of the Newark Museum's opening of an exhibition devoted to Portuguese art, culture, and history. The program concludes with a traffic report from announcer Manny Gomez, plus more music and advertisements. Includes commercials and public service announcements.
