WADO IN ACTION {1280 WADO HISPANIC TALK RADIO} {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- SPANISH} (RADIO)

Summary

One in this series of call-in programs from a radio station that listens and talks to the Hispanic community in New York. Host Max Perez Jimenez opens this edition of the program with some news and a weather report. Items in the news include a meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia, the announcement of a tax-free week in New York, and the appearance of the movie "Titanic" on video. The host moves on to the presentation of the first topic of this Wado In Action edition: anger. He encourages his listeners to call and describe moments of anger they have experienced and the methods they used to overcome the anger. The listeners describe a range of anger-causing situations, including traffic jams, unjust traffic tickets, everyday relationships, robberies, and sexist or personal attacks. Remedies mentioned include positive thinking, faith and high spirituality, better nutrition, psychological education, and exercise. A short news report follows from Marie Faluz. It includes a discussion of the registration of new students in New York City schools, with a live report from New Jersey by Jose Rohairi documenting the registration of more than 1,000,000 students. Next, the host moves to the second call-in topic of the day: the success of Dominican baseball star Sammy Sosa. As well as regular listeners, this segment features telephone calls from a number of sports commentators. Billy Veroa, a Dominican Sports narrator, praises SosaÕs work and talks about the competition between Sosa and Mark McGwire; he attributes the Dominican player's popularity to his simplicity and humility. Veroa and the listeners also discuss Sosa's impact as a role model for Latino kids. Listeners express their pride in being Dominican and/or Hispanic and predict that Sosa will break the home-run record. The program is interrupted by the announcement of a shooting between FBI agents and civilians near Central Park, followed by a short news summary. When the discussion returns to Sosa, Yankees Hispanic news reporter Veto Villa predicts that Sosa will break the record in eighteen games. Armando Otravella, general producer for Yankees Hispanic, talks about the friendly competition between Sosa and McGwire and expresses his admiration for Sosa. More listeners also praise Sosa for his modesty and humility. The program concludes with a chat with Roberto Clemente, Jr., of Yankees Hispanic, who discusses his own admiration for Sosa and his trust in the playerÕs continuing success.
