WADO-AM NEW YORK, 1280 {A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING} {TAPE 1 OF 3} {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- SPANISH} (RADIO)

Summary

Tape one of three. One in this series of eclectic Spanish-language live radio talk programs, hosted from New York by Gisela Garcia and Coco Alipio. This edition's first theme is nostalgia, and it is dedicated to listeners who are sensitive to memories brought back by songs or perfumes. The hosts share their own personal memories, as do the listeners. Some of the artists whose songs are mentioned as evoking memories are Elena Barker, Ramon Gallardo, Pablo Quever, Visconti, Pueblo Fonseca, and Sandro de America. At times, the listeners sing some of the songs that stimulate their nostalgia, and Garcia and Alipio hum along. Perfumes mentioned as particularly evocative include Calvin Klein's Obsession and Guerlain's Imperial. Memories discussed include people (first loves, lovers, family members) and special moments shared with neighbors and family. The hosts break from time to time to play songs that are known for bringing back memories; these cover a range of Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, and Bachata tunes. Garcia and Alipio maintain a light, interactive tone with their listeners and with each other, sharing friendly fights, gossip, and jokes. They also present a list of stars who are celebrating their birthdays and the lottery numbers for the day. The program breaks for a short news segment, presented by Ivan IzaguirrŽ. Stories include the second biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market, Bill Clinton's trip to Moscow to express his solidarity with the Russian people and government during that country's economic crisis, the start of the school year, and sports news reported by Armand Talavera. When the program resumes, the two hosts read letters from their listeners and choose one to discuss. It comes from a woman who writes that she married for love but is still a virgin after many years of conjugal life because of her husband's sleepiness. Listeners call in to suggest a number of strategies for dealing with this problem, including both natural and occult remedies. The majority advise the woman to find herself a lover; some listeners actually offer their services in this regard. The program goes on to introduce a couple of guests. The first, ophthalmologist Rafael Cavero, talks about the definition, causes, and treatment of myopia. The second, economist Gilberto Garcia, discusses the causes of the current drop in the stock market and advises listeners who own stock not to worry; he suggests that the market will re-stabilized itself. As the tape ends, the hosts ask sportscaster Armand Talavera to discuss Sammy Sosa's fifty-fifth home run, which has enabled him to match the record of Mark McGwire. Listeners are invited to call and express their opinions about the possible winner of the ongoing competition between the two. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. Continues with R:16976.
