OYATE TA OLOWAN: SONGS OF THE PEOPLE: EDDIE BENTON BANAI {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- NATIVE AMERICAN/ENGLISH} (RADIO)

Summary

One in this series of radio programs, featuring the music and voices of individuals from twenty-six Native-American tribes throughout the United States. Each program includes musical performances and interviews with Native-American artists, accompanied by narration by host Milt Lee. This episode features singing and commentary by Eddie Benton Banai, a member of the Fish Clan of the Ojibwe Tribe. Banai was born and lives in northern Wisconsin. He discusses the geography of his tribe and then talks about the sound of the drum and what it means to him. Banai is one of the elders in his community, listeners learn, and he still practices the traditional ways of his people; he talks about these traditions and explains that they are dying out today. As a young man, Banai was active in the American Indian Movement (AIM) and was present during the occupation of Wounded Knee village in 1973. Banai talks about the musical traditions of his tribe and about the original "creator songs," singing one of these songs. He discusses the spirituality and religious beliefs of the Ojibwe, their musical instruments and rhythm patterns, powwow music, and the concept of the drum as a symbol of the heartbeat. He sings several songs, including social songs and a hunting song. Includes promos.

(This program is in the English and Ojibwe languages.)

The acquisition and cataloging of this program were made possible by Marvin and Jacqueline Kosofsky.
